Organic chemistry is just that kind of class that requires a lot of work. Its 70% you and 30% the teacher. Dr. Doig is a good professor but I always had to do extra work after lecture. I always understood him. His tests are on material learned in class. He doesn't curve any of his test but he did curve up our HW grades.

test were too hard and annoying, would have perferred smaller but more tests, he basically tells you during course evals he isnt changing anything... thought i was going to fail but somehow made it out with C. i found the class extremely interesting though. taught myself a lot of it. practice tests we not helpful because there is no answer key.

Doig has simply been at this too long. He is retired and has lost his passion and drive to teach. He simply lists the material on the board and says 'you see.' When asked where an equation was derived from, he said: "I don't remember, some mathematician came up with it. Even if you have done well in other chems, be prepared to barely even pass.

A great lab instructor. Open note quizzes. He's a tough grader but good at explaining things. He's not super into safety and he breaks a lot of things but I seriously doubt you'll do bad in that class.

Nice guy. Terrible lecture teacher. Only take him if you are good at teaching yourself from the book.

4 tests and no quizzes. The ACS final helps your grade. Good course overall. Very interesting. Tough grader.

I had Doig for both 231 and 232. He's definitely a better option for 232. His lectures are sometimes confusing, but it helps to go over everything in the book afterwards. Do all the problems he assigns in the book and the ones throughout the chapters and you should be fine. He's pretty helpful if you go to his office hours with specific questions.

Dr. Doig really doesn't teach you the information. He just presents it to you. He comes in and makes up stuff from his head and only provides an outline, which he doesn't really go by. He's a nice man though. Does a major curve at the end.

He is the WORST, I'm happy he is almost done with an embarrassing career as an Instructor. Avoid him until he is done, take anyone else for Biochemistry.

Comes to class with a box of chalk and that is it, no notes, outline. Gives an outline for each new section of material, but then doesn't follow in any kind of order. Can't prepare for lecture because he jumps all over the place. Condescending if you don't understand, expects you to already know the material. Makes difficult material impossible.

Go to his office hours well-prepared with questions. If you take good notes in lecture, do the book problems, and go to office hours you will not only make the grade but a friend. Doig is a rare, kind soul. He wrote me a fantastic letter of recommendation to medical school--and practically everyone else from CofC in my first year class!

Dr. Doig is very funny in lecture, which helps because organic is pretty dry stuff. His tests are super straight-forward ("cookbook" chemistry, if you've heard the term). Take good notes in lecture, memorize them, and do as many book problems as you can stand--half the test questions are straight from the text--and you will be fine.

Doig knows his stuff...You have to bust your backside in this class or you're toast but the material itself isn't that bad, repetition is key. This is THE pre-med weeder @ CofC and under 10% of the class will be getting A's...40% will fail or withdraw. He's the best Orgo Prof here though just take this class seriously, like 15-20 hrs/wk studying

Dont take Ochem at CofC, if you have no other choice, then take 4 credits for one semester and study for Ochem all day everyday, its not hard, its just waaaaaaaaaaay too many reagents to know. Doig is an OK professor.

I took organic over the summer. Dr. Doig is the man. Organic is hard no matter what but Dr. Doig grades fairly and knows what he is talking about. Better than some others options for this class at the College.

Orgo is like learning another language...put the time in and it will come together and make sense. Dr. Doig is great and always willing to help...reminds me of a jolly grandpa... best orgo teacher @ CofC just realize you have to put in the work

Organic Chemistry is not easy...but he does his best to help students understand. I loved him and I recommend taking him! If you want to pass, do all of the homework problems and read the book. Then you'll do well.

NO...no. no. turn around and run. I had him for both semesters of orgo and he does not explain anything well. If you need detail, involvement and examples do NOT even think about doiggy bear. There are no quizzes and the 4 tests consist of tricky multiple choice and TONS of reactions. no mechanisms or nomenclature normally. attendance is not mand.

Comment:
Awful...his lectures are made up on the spot. They are disjointed and nothing flows in the class. He assigns book problems to prepare you for a test, but then the test is nothing like the assigned problems. I had him for orgo, loved it. Biochem, avoid at all costs! Take Riggs or Rodgers...
