Comment:
Metzger is nice, and helpful during office hours, however in class during discussions she can come off as arrogant and condescending when students ask her questions. When a student gives off an opinion that is wrong she clearly tells them it's wrong and voices her own opinion on it, and is not open to other answers.

MJ can be a little intimidating but nevertheless, shes a fantastic professor who gives great feedback if you take the time to visit her during office hours. You absolutely have to work in this class, especially if you struggle with Shakespeare like myself, but she is very helpful as long as you put effort in!

I really loved MJ's class but I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that she liked me, too. You'll read a LOT but it's pretty interesting! You can't miss more than 3 classes (without disability accom.) or you'll fail so be prepared for that. I'm by no means an A student but did well because I did the readings and participated in class.

M.J. is the best professor I had in the department. She has an amazing outlook on literature which I found truly inspiring. I enjoyed her teaching, loved her casual yet professional vibe, and felt very valued as a student while in her class. Straightforward grading, and AMAZING feedback. Lectures could be repetitive, but she was worth it.

I had MJ for two classes (308/418) at Western and had a great experience both times! Do not expect to coast in her class. Do the reading and participate every class. She expects a lot out of her students, but just like any class, the more you put in, the more you get out. Definitely take advantage of her office hours!! MJ is always willing to help.

Dr. Metzger is super passionate about her subject. I feel like I gained a lot from her class-- mainly because she gives a lot of homework. The homework isn't super hard, but does take a while. Otherwise she only assigns pretty short readings from Shakespeare. We go over every reading and assignment in class, which is helpful is you're struggling.

I got a weird vibe from Mary. She would talk over students even though she wanted us to be respectful of each other. Guidelines were vague. She wanted specific answers out of our position papers and discussions. Too long of a class for the material we covered. She was sweet and nice and helpful in office hours, but I'm glad the class is over.

Mary is hilarious, interesting, and challenging as a professor. She expects a lot out of her students, but is encouraging and if you participate and put in the effort then you will do very well. This course was themed Philosophy and Tragedy, and it was amazing.

She has extremely clear expectations, the workload is reasonable, she gives amazing feedback, leads great discussions that make all of the readings seem interesting, will curve grades depending on how everyone does, and is always there if you need help with the class or feel overwhelmed. Oh and she frequently bakes cookies for the class.

Mary is well qualified and passionate about her topic. I learned a great deal in this class. Mostly my complaint lies in her manner. She smiles but she is arrogant and intimidating and does not respect students' personal views yet insists on aggressively voicing hers. Proceed with caution.

Good professor. Expectations were occasionally a tad murky, but she clarified when asked. Genuinely cares about every one of her students, and accommodates many different kinds of learning. Eager to help and encourages visits at office hours. Somewhat biased, which makes contributing to discussion intimidating sometimes. Overall a quality course.

All of the introduction essays are difficult to understand on your own, dense and long. Then you need to always write out thorough notes and thoughts on said readings. Her as a teacher is worse, however. She was the rudest, most condescending person I have ever met. And if you don't share her views? Don't bother speaking. Avoid at all costs.

Mary is by far the worst teacher I have had at Western. She is condescending, treated me differently than everyone in the class because I was really sick, and grades accordingly. I will NEVER take another class with her. HORRIBLE teacher.

Mary is super sweet and personable! She encourages you to participate in discussions and will sometimes call on you if you don't often speak in class, even if your hand isn't raised. The material can be difficult to understand, and she expects you to grasp things like she does which can be difficult. Other than that, great class!

Metzger is the best college professor I've had thus far! She's intelligent and down-to-earth. Utilizing her office hours is helpful. She makes it easy to read such difficult text. Participating in class discussions (or at least paying attention to them) is useful for tests and the essay. (Yes, THE essay.) I'd definitely take another of her classes!

Shakespeare has been a great class. There is a lot of material to cover with 5 plays in a quarter, but it?s done at a good pace. She?s welcome to help and you?re encouraged to develop your own interpretations. You will be challenged, but you can succeed if you just go to class and take good notes, and do the readings.

If you want to walk away from a class having learned a whole bunch, take one from this Prof. She really knows her stuff and well directed questions can help steer tangents. She cares a lot about student understanding, so speak up if something is over your head.

She makes you read six novels in one quarter. Tons of jargon like post modernism and stuff like that. I'm glad it's over
