Comment:

If you need a history course for a GE or DEI, you can't go wrong with Prof. Plant. Her lectures actively reference and build on the readings (with plenty of chances for discussion), but aren't so dense or fast-paced as to be overwhelming. Short essay compared to other hist classes, and you'll know what to expect for your tests. Do the readings.

Comment:

In the beginning was a little bit tedious for me because more sociology incorporated than i expected but very clear direction in the class and grading criteria. she really is great, even some of her views vastly different from mine. One of my favorite professors at the school i just wish she taught cellular neurobiology.

Comment:

Absolutely take her class! She is a phenomenal teacher and is extremely knowledgable on her subject. Her midterms aren't too bad and she's very helpful during office hours.

This Civil War Course is not simply a military history, but an exploration of ideology, whether political, racial, gender, economic, etc. Make sure you pay close attention to the readings- they form the basis of your test essay questions. To be successful, read and make connections to the lecture (and with other readings) using specific examples.

Very accessible! Lectures are concise and typically include phrases such as "the main point" or "the upshot here is," which allows for good note taking and an emphasis on the conceptual. Many people think that to do well in a history course you have to be detail oriented - professors like this demonstrate otherwise. Also: very kind and attentive!

Professor Plant was really clear, clearly passionate about the subject (women's history) and I thought the class was interesting. The reading was pretty standard, the tests were fine, and the essays were pretty much what you would expect if you had been even paying some attention to class

I took this class last quarter and it was very good and the grading was fair. This quarter the TA is horrible and is a really hard and unfair grader. However I took my essay and mitdterm to be regraded and the Professor gave me a full letter grade an a half higher. Overall the class is fine but don't take it if Alicia is the TA.

Apparently Prof. Plant's grading agenda is VERY difficult (either that or the below posters were right in that Alicia is very hard) I thought my midterm was peeerrfect but apparently, Alicia docked points for no reason. No comments whatsoever. Professor Plant herself said that you should be fine with readings+lectures but apparently not.

She isn't very clear on what she wants -- the grader/"TA" doesn't help much either. Readings are KINDA interesting but does not help at all since she goes over it in class. She just finds new ways to rephrase what is on her powerpoint. An okay class but VERY difficult grading--Alicia Ratterree is DEFINITELY not a grader you'd want in any case.

You won't know how you are doing in this class until ~6th week in when you get your essay back. Hope you get an easy-moderate grader; mine was horribly difficult and her comments do not help at all. Avoid Alicia Ratterree--she will kill your grade in the class.

Professor Plant is a nice lady. But very difficult grader!! I was glad when I pulled off a B+ (keep in mind, I strive hard to have A's). She's not very clear on what she wants from you. Be sure to explain everything you know!

shes a really great lecturer. i wasnt sure what to expect from the class at first, but i ended up loving it. the reading isnt too heavy for a history class and most of it is actually quite good. definitely recommend her.

Go to the lectures and takes the notes and show up to your sectins and you can get an A...as long as you sudy all the notes and skim through the books. Easy class but a little time consuming....
