DO NOT TAKE WITH THIS PROFESSOR! I'm sure he's a nice guy outside of class but they load you with information that is not at all on the slides and expect you to pass the tests. The first test is easy and then the next two are awful. Extra credit is also graded very hard. Textbook was useless.

Comment:

By far the hardest class I have taken at UH. I have never put more effort into a class. In order to do well in this class, attendance is mandatory and taking good notes is very important. If you mess up on one test, it is hard to comeback from since the OPTIONAL final only averages into the test averages. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER.

Grade is made up of 3 exams (25% each), clicker questions (10%), and weekly HW (15%). Dr. A taught the first half of the course while Dr. W taught the second. He was significantly more clear and more helpful than Dr. W. Clicker questions and HW are easy (also gives extra HW and CQ). All test material is on the slides, so textbook not necessary.

Comment:

This class wasn't so bad... 25% of your grade is clicker HW and attendance questions so you should be able to get 100% on it. This class was team taught with Dr. Wiernasz. I preferred Dr. Azevedo's exam questions and material more. If you're a math person, do really well on his half, because Wiernasz is boring and her section sucks. 85 is an A.

Its next to impossible to get an A in this course. Each exam has less than 20 questions on it for over a month's worth of material and its unlikely to be anything you've seen before. His teaching style is akin to giving you toy blocks and expecting you to build a skyscraper out of them.

His Evolutionary Bio class is great...till you take the test and its nothing like the material. If you want to get killed in a class, take this class. He does clicker questions and no question is like that on the test, so pointless. Homework is super hard as well. He's a good teacher but the test will kill you.

Completely agree with comment below. Despite what others say, I found him to be one of the best bio professors. He is very clear in teaching & doesn't hesitate to answer questions in class if there is confusion. Test was not hard assuming one studies & homework wasn't too bad. Duel taught with Wiernasz & both were great, really cared for the class

Concentrate on his notes and class lectures. Clear, cogent slides and engrossing, concise teaching style. You can sense he is very passionate about the material and his enthusiasm about the topic is infectious. Outstanding teacher and a top notch course -- be ready to be amazed (& to toil).

I found him to be a very good professor, very helpful. The exams can be challenging as well as the homeworks. Anyone should be fine but studying is a must, it's not like other classes. I would definitely recommend this professor for evolution.

Im sure he's fine as a general biology class, but as far as his evolution class dont take it!!! His evolution class is actually a pop gen/ stats class. You learn nothing about evolution all he teach you are equations.

2 tests, 5 hw, 1 final. Teaches the class with another prof. tests were difficult and hw lacked focus. explanations weren't provided afterwards a lot of times. Study hard and attend class. There is a curve a the end bc so many ppl did poorly.

The book is horrible - the slides are useless unless you go to class. More time is spent deriving formulas than using them. Tests are harder then homework and more in depth then info given in class. I think I spent more time trying to understand what he was saying then learning.

One of the best bio teachers Ive had. Im a B student but I made almost perfect scores. Gives old exams, practice questions, essay prompts in advance, & online xtra credit quizzes. Book helps with concepts & examples & is easy to read. Slides are not helpful w/o attending lecture & book doesnt supplement. I loved his lectures. He curves (z-score)!!

I took Evolutionary Biology with him. He is very poor in explaining. His tests do not reflect what he covers in the class. If you can, take another class instead. Exam grade average is usually 50-60. He will curve later, but useless. Stay away from his class. He seems to have difficulty in understanding the way the american education system works.

His tests are hard! Don't bother reading the book, it's useless for the test. You have to go to class, and even still its not that much more helpful. Know to solve the CALCULATION part REAL WELL because that's all he cares about.

Do NOT take him, he is hard! His lectures don't make sense & book doesn't help! There is NO curve either! Tests are hard & confusing. Most people got C's even after studying their azz offs. You will regret it. Not helpful & not nice.

I don't get why everyone is putting him down so hard.I thought that his tests did have a few ambiguous questions and he tended to ramble,but he did take it slow so everyone could understand and encouraged questions.But I highly recommend you go to class and RECORD his lectures.Then,the book becomes unneccessary(but still a helpful supplement)
