Very patient, generous with partial credit on tests + drops lowest. one oral exam at the end and it was a one on one meeting so not too much pressure. we had translations for HW but he didnt collect them, would just have us write a sentence on the board (free points??) definitely recommend

Very enthusiastic in his subject. Goes into great detail to explain more than what is just in the book such as etymologies of words, synonyms, specifics of certain words. Very patient and takes time to reexplain concepts that might not be understood the first time. An impartial grader. Occasionally can be late in the beginning.

Professor Yao is a great instructor who truly wants his student to succeed. Class is very long and dry if you are a native speaker. However, it's interesting to hear him goes over new vocabulary, idioms, and grammar for every new lesson. He gives out a test every 2-3 weeks. No homework at all. Overall, a very chilled professor.

This professor was great! I had a blast in this class, I really learned a lot, though I wished i had more time to spend learning this stuff, because sometimes I did not have time to spend studying for his class, so I did not do so well on the tests. But, this teacher, though he is hard, teaches well, and grades fairly. I had him for 25B too.

Awesome professor. I felt that, to succeed, you probably should know at least a little bit of Chinese. The lessons were a breeze and he was very entertaining and friendly. I'm upset that he's not teaching Chinese 1B next semester. Overall great professor.

Do not take this class lightly. Although, the professor does a pretty good job teaching the material by engaging students, he expects a lot. Requirement is to learn both Pinyin, Simplified or Traditional (your choice). Do not fall behind like I did or your likely to never catch up. Final requires full range of vocabulary learned. Think I failed.

Very patient and laid back individual. His lectures revolve around student presentations and assigned readings. Overall, he's a very fair grader and favors those who participate in discussions regardless of race. This class requires a fair amount of work, but if you devote time to read (1000+ pages) you should ace the class. Class parallels eng1b.

Extremely boring because he has a monotonous voice. If you are not Chinese, then you're basically screwed. The majority of the time he teaches in Chinese, so I had to ask the girl sitting next to me to translate what he was saying. It was obvious that I was struggling with the class, yet he did care. He LOVES calling on the Chinese kids (from China

take this class if you love to read because the reading was too much. take another upper ge class where it is easy to get an A. you have to read everything (which i think adds up to over 1000 pages in the end) to pass the class because the tests are based on the readings. He favors chinese students so if you arent chinese then good luck.

The class was easy...but only if you were on track with the reading. Unlike some classes, the reading DOES count for this class. I was on track with the reading...but I felt overwhelmed at times. However, I found the reading to be very interesting. One presentation (in which you have to try to lead a discussion), 3 essays, 1 research paper, 2 exams

非常好!Professor Yao was great. Totally got me interested in learning Chinese. So much that I ended up spending a year in Shanghai to learn more. Not that I wasn't learning in his class, but living in Shanghai is like having class 24/7. I'm pretty much fluent now. 谢谢老师。

Dr.Yao is a great teacher. I felt a bit intimidated at first because the class seem pretty advanced. But you soon learn to catch up. He tries to get you to participate, it made me nervous at first, but you eventually learn to know everyone and feel comfortable with it. There are three exams and three essays that aren't too hard.

I was expecting it to be challenging but it wasn't. If you are looking for a easy chinese class I recommend Professor Yao for Chin25A. Theres actually no projects or activity for this class. Just show up to class, turn in you hw, and turn in you book report on time. Easy class but attendace counts as participation points.

Wish I had him for the intermediate classes. Also had him for Chin 140. He is a fair grader and is willing to help you learn. It is fast paced, but if you ask him questions, he will gladly answer them. Be prepared to work in his class, especially for the foreign language courses.
