First off, Hain Sensei is the WORST JPN teacher I have ever had. She has no sympathy for her students. I did not pass her class despite seeking help during office hours and trying my absolute hardest. I ended up having to stay another quarter just to finish the JPN series. If you are a Business major stay away from JPN, take Spanish.

I've only heard bad things about this teacher and should have listened to my upperclassmen who are majoring in Japanese. I had several friends who received an A in first quarter JPN and failed this class. It is difficult to repeat the class bc it depends on the quarter. Fall = Jpn 1, Winter = Jpn 2, etc Better to get Sagawa or Sato. Giving up on JPN

Hain-sensei is a wonderful teacher. She wants us to understand Japanese, and focuses on listening and speaking abilities. Her class is challenging. She has a test after each chapter, a MT and final, numerous small quizzes, and a skit. Hain-sensei's a lot of fun and it's always my favourite class.

She is really, really fun to learn from but you have to study hard to get a good grade. She helps you as much as she can but when it comes to grammar you have to learn on your own. I highly recommend her if you want to learn Japanese

I had her for JPN 6 and struggled, but in JPN 101B, Hain was a BLAST! She spoke casually, yes, but that made the whole class informal; I was not afraid to make mistakes and Hain's attitude encouraged use of learned grammar. Once you get use to her, she's hilarious! Compared to Mr. Smith & Mrs. Shimabuku, Hain is the BEST upper-div JPN instructor!

I had Hain for 3 quarters so you could say I know all her tricks. If you're going to have her for the first time, beware, she's not easy. Sometimes she pulls a fast one on you like putting a vocab on the test that the class hardly uses. Loads of quizzes + 4 ch test + midterm(2ch) + final(2ch). Don't fall behind and you will do fine. Shes cool too

Run don't walk FAR away from this teacher's upper division classes. Very unhelpful, unfriendly, and unavailable even during office hours. Where did all these good reviews come from? She is only nice to lower division and her teacher's pets. ALL her students I talk with are struggling. Tests add things she doesn't cover.Don't go to UCR for JPN major

AVOID FOR UPPER DIV IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. Most of these cats making nice comments are lower div.. She expects you to be practically fluent by the time you are at this level.. She speaks informally almost all of the time. BEWARE. I studied Japanese elsewhere prior to UCR. She's nice but she grades a little too strictly. My entire class feared her.

Not as easy as level 1. You have to keep practicing or else you will easily fall behind and it will be hard to catch up. Hain sensei makes class time very fun and you will have a great time. Overall, as long as you keep up, A for sure.

She tells you from the start that it wouldn't be as easy as Jap001 and she follows through with that, but its really not that bad. She creates a feel-good environment: if you participate, you'll have fun. She might make fun of you in the process, but its all in good humour. If you're looking to actually learn Japanese, I'd recommend her.

Hain-sensei is very nice, but her lessons are very fast and it's easy to fall behind... and hard to catch up. Everyone says she is easier than Sagawa-sensei, but in my opinion, I think it's the opposite.

Great teacher! I can no longer remember much vocabulary, but native Japanese complement me on my accent! Outstanding classroom skils. She raises the bar high but it's the best way to learn a language.

Hain-sensei is my favorite of the Japanese teachers, although all are difficult (Sato, Sagawa, and Sato). Hain has a very pleasant disposition and is very approachable. Her sense of humor, as weird as it may be, is her most valuable asset.

Awesome teacher. If you're interested in taking Japanese, Hain-sensei is the way to go. Her structure lets her teach the most important stuff in just the right amounts every day, and the pace is great. As long as you pay attention, take notes, and do homework, you'll do great in Japanese.

A very nice and fun prof overall. likes to call on students out of the blue so be prepared and pay attention in class! Quizzes/tests are easy but isn't very lenient on grading. she also tries to make everyday in class interesting and fun so that's a definite plus.

Good teacher! Has a really cute sense of humor and sometimes go off a tangent and talks about Japanese culture (which I greatly appreciate ^_^) Quizzes and tests are easy, but finals are midterms are kinda hard.

She is nice, but her sytle of teaching is unformal. I had her since jap01, she expects alot. Quizs are mid-hard and you only have a short time. Midterms get a little more challeging. Her teaching style is hard to keep up with, cus she goes at a fast pace.

Hain Sensei is great! I've had her since JPN 01 and her teaching style is really great. As long as you go to class and review the notes and keep up with the hw you'll do fine in the class.
