I took his romantic poetry class and LOVED him! Maybe i wasn't the best writer in the class but i still came out with a good grade. He's witty and funny and very willing to work with you and help you out if you need it. He does like to tell his own stories, some are interesting and funny, others not so much but bare with him he's a great guy!

I had Alan as a prof at SFU for two classes: Romantic Poetry & modern American poetry, and he is one of the finest professors I've ever had. Enthusiastic, smart, witty, etc. He drinks Dalwhinnie.

Prof. Vardy changed my life. His open minded, reasonable, extremely intelligent style of teaching helped me to discover a literary cannon I would have not had the courage to otherwise explore.

He's intelligent, logical, and knowledgeable. Great to converse with. However, IN class he will nearly bore you to death with his dull stories. Also, he is an extremely anal about mechanics and trivialities on essays. He only wants to hear himself in your paper. You can submit five drafts and still get a B! Avoid him if you value your GPA.

Professor Vardy is that rare public utility that is revivified by use. He integrates knowledge on multiple planes, giving you a sense of the work, its place in a larger history, and its continuing presence in our own moment. He takes his students very seriously and asks that they do the same. If you want integrity, rigor and passion, go to!

Vardy is a true gentleman scholar. Brilliant, festive, and fierce on all things theory, Vardy makes a tough topic interesting with his endless array of examples from history, literature, and pop culture. In addition, he's helpful on papers, and he's always available during office hours. However, he's not for the dim bulbs of the world.

If you are going into Lit. Theory because you love it, take him. If you are going into Lit. Theory because you have to, try to find someone else. Though he is nice, and pretty funny, his class is a lot of work, especially if you don't give a rat's you-know-what about the material.

Prof. Vardy is a tough grader of papers. He set rules and guidelines as to how papers are to be written for him that asked things of me that I hadn't encountered before. On the other hand, once you sit down to discuss it with him, you come away know what he wants from you.

Learning SO MUCH and it is useful in ALL aspects of graduate work - difficult material made interesting by Vardy's vast knowledge and historical base of reference - could use a few more literary examples to support theories learned, though.

I found that the material was difficult to understand and his examples for some of the material was not helpful. However, for at least three of the theories I was able to understand his examples. He gives short journals to make sure that you understand the concepts. Overall he is okay I got a B.
