don't take this class if you aren't super solid in calc. He's a great guy, really nice and loves to help students, but hes not the clearest lecturer. always available in office hours and by email, love this guy

nice teacher! If you can't understand the lecture, you are welcome to go to his office hour. He tried very hard to help students. A lot of in class activity. one point I don't like is a lot of homework.

One of the best math teachers I've ever had. Shao gives out 4 exams throughout the quarter, so that if you do poorly on one, you can always make up for it on the next text. The final is not cumlative, and he gives extra credit homework to help your grade. He makes Calculus friendly

Bin Shao tries to help, but is not a very effective lecturer. You will need to put in a lot of time with the textbook or another resource unless you go into his office hours.

He's an extremely nice and understanding professor. He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. If you have any questions, he's always happy to help. And as long as you put in effort to do the homework and do the study guides, you will get an A.

I also had him for MATH 31. He is very nice especially if you attend class regularly. He has a pretty strong accent, but the notes he puts on the board are clear. He also gives study guides before each test that are almost identical to the test. In 31 there is no final. Overall good teacher.

I took him for 30 and 31 because I was told that if you have him for 30, you MUST take him again otherwise you'll fail. It's really hard to understand him a lot of times, but he's a really nice guy. He gave partial credit which helped out a lot.

It was difficult for me to get used to Bin Shao at first because i have always had really organized math professors before and his style of giving notes was a bit messy for me at first. But he is obviously intelligent, kind and helpful. He will gladly take any questions from the class. If you do the review sheets you will get an A in the class.

I never took notes during his class and did well on all of the tests. Just study from the book and do the review problems before the tests. He talks very slowly and writes everything out which makes the class boring. NO FINAL OR MIDTERM which is a BIG plus. Just 4 tests. Despite how boring he is he is probably one of the best so take him.

TAKE HIM! He's not the easiest to understand but his tests are EASY. He gives you a practice test before to take home and the test is literally the same thing with different numbers. He's very sweet, and you will enjoy him as a person.

Though it's easy to get lost in his lectures (due to the speed at which he introduces topics and his accent), he is very helpful during office hours. I struggled with this class at first, but he guided me along the way and took great care to make sure I was getting the material. Great guy.

WORST math teacher I have ever had and he doesn't speak english. I've learned more from tutors than from him in an entire quarter. His tests are hard but homework is easy because he assigns all of the odd problems. If you have done well in a calculus course before then his class may be easy but if you want him to teach you then forget it. AVOID HIM

I am terrible at Math and I was able to get by in his class. Suck up to him early on so he can know you for the whole quarter. He does have favorites.Going to class is key because he rips his test problems straight from in class examples. They are basically identical. He lets you have a note card (sooo helpful). He is nerdy and fun to joke with.

Professor Shao knows his stuff, but does not understand that you may not. If you are a good self learner, his tests are really easy. However, do not expect to learn the concepts if you arent very good at math, his explanations are terrible. Final is way harder than tests and worth 45% of your grade

Many of this reviews are misleading! Professor Shao gives you 3 tests and 1 final. For the tests he gives you a study guide ahead of time which is similar to the test but he changes the numbers. The final is pretty much the same deal. If you take advantage of office hours the material will be clearer. You have to do your part too!

This class is a joke. If you are good at math then take him, if you are not good and need someone who is good at explaining STAY AWAY! He is impossible to understand and going into office hours are a waste of time. He is mean. The final is really hard too.

Everyone says the final is hard...it's not. The class is a breeze if you go to class and do the assignments. He is willing to help his students in class and during office hours. He is difficult to understand sometimes but it's because of his accent. Shao is also pretty funny. He gives you practice problems, which are identical to those on the test.
