Comment:
Dr. Bekus may have good intentions and be a nice guy, but the Legends of King Arthur class is a flop. Do not take it. Literally all the class consisted of was him telling us what happened in the books we read, with a few essays here and there that he graded extremely hard. I feel like I did not learn anything and that it was a waste of money.

If you have a logical position for your arguments, Dr. Bekus will respect your position, even if he doesn't agree with it. You can't just get away with reading the material - you have to think about it. I wish there were more classes I could take with him.

I took an honors class with him. There were only 7 students in the class, so there wasn't much discussion and most of the class was just him talking and everyone else nodding, pretending to listen, and giving the occasional comment. He was a tough grader, but I think he was fair. He gave feedback and multiple chances to get the grade you want.

DO NOT TAKE! He goes from talking to yelling on and off and will single people out. He is not understanding and isn't approachable at all.

He is a very hard grader. He is a great person overall but I think he needs to be teacher upperlevel english classes our graduate level classes. Also read closely because he is going to ask about the story all the time. Also if you interpet the story differently than he does then that is wrong.

He is the embodiment of why I hate English/lit classes. He teaches lit as if it were a science. He only gives a good grade if you take his side and use his reasons or if you completely discredit the other side. His way or the highway. When it came to papers though he gave awesome critiques.

Comment:
Very harsh grading method, expects specific answers that only align with his unexpressed opinion. He does not promote individual ideas but instead expects you to know the general consensus of academic literary critics. We were also tested on authors that neither the professor nor the syllabus even alluded to. Expects unreasonable amounts of effort.

English 1010 all over again. I signed up thinking it was a contemporary issues class. The professor has neat stories and great information. We have nice discussions but sometimes its just too early. I missed quite a few classes and still did well. Papers in this class are focused on sentence structure, word choice, and unity.

Dr. Bekus is an elderly man who is already retired but still chooses to teach. I had him only because the professors were switched last minute. His syllabus was very unclear, and he changed it quite often. He is unspecific on what he looks for in the papers, and grades harshly. The assigned novels were very boring and irrelevant to the course.

Dr. Bekus is one of the best instructors I have taken. He is willing to meet with you to go over what you donĂ¢€™t understand, and although he is challenging, taking his class is worth it because of the knowledge you will gain from his lectures.

Had him for English 101, 102, and 103 back in 1986-'87. Got a C my first quarter...worked up to an A by spring. Brilliant yes, but in my opinion he was also arrogant, sarcastic, and unapproachable on a personal level. I would advise against taking him.

Dr. Bekus is Awesome! He even made learing the history of the dictionary interesting. He will take as much time as you need to understand the material and is more than willing to help with anything. He has a love of literature and gets really enthusiastic talking about it. He loves teaching and even makes something like a grammer class fun.

Dr. Bekus is very intelligent, however, he does not do a very good job of explaining. He also expects you to think exactly the way he does when writing. Although I read all the stories (some parts multiple time), took really great notes from both him and the book, I still didn't get the grade I wanted.

DO NOT TAKE!I took Dr. Bekus for English Lit. and although as everyone says he is very smart and know his stuff he is an awful undergraduate teacher. He expects you to be just as smart as him. I studied for his test extremely well and still made 70's or below. I do not recommend taking him if you only want to take english lit once.

I took Dr. Bekus for History of the English Language and Etymology and it was the hardest class ever. Do not take him, I typed up notes for study guide and then on the test it was completely different. He should not be teaching undergraduates!

Extremely intelligent! My writing improved tremendously while a student in the Heritage program under Dr. Bekus. That was some years ago, and I am currently a doctoral candidate. You have to bring a passion for wanting to develop yourself as a writer if you are to gain anything from the class.

He's a super smart teacher and though most people in my class failed or quit early I found his class great. He was really into what he was teaching and he was hard on grading only because he expected us to not be idiots. I don't think there's anything wrong with being hard to give your students a challenge and this is one thing he excels at.

Dr. Bekus is a brilliant man but should not be teaching undergraduate students. His ridiculous grading style made it seem impossible to receive an A. He had no faith in our class, and made us all feel inferior rather than helping us to succeed. He had entertaining anecdotes to every topic, but I wish he could have been more helpful for assignments.
