She's a brilliant anthropologist and a great person. He class is well organized, her prompts are thought-provoking, and she lets you be creative with your essays, always providing lots of feedback. Her grading is fair and class is always interesting. She's one of the best CulAnth professors I've had and I will definitely take more of her classes.

Allison is honestly just a terrible teacher. Her lectures will bore you to sleep and she doesn't really know what she's talking about. Cul Anth is a really interesting subject but if you are taking it for an easy A or for any other reason save yourself and take it with Orin Starn!!! He's amazing.

Comment:

Sweet, passionate and knowledgeable. Course material was basically a scattered overview of her colleagues' work, but still learned a lot. Sent out study guides with clear exam material. Long readings but lectures walked through everything important. TAs graded everything, basically looking for specific buzzwords. 4 pop quizzes on small details.

CulAnth is very interesting, but Allison killed it for me. She has no lecture notes and it doesn't help that her lectures are not well structured either. Even when I did all of the reading I did worse on the exams than when I didn't do reading. I think TAs grade exams so the grading is extremely arbitrary. Take CulAnth but not with her.

Professor Allison is a great professor with a vast amount of knowledge about Japanese culture. It's been two years and I still remember EVERYTHING I've learned. Her teaching style is clear, effective, interesting and fun. Highly recommended.

Anne Allison is smart and helpful and has a genuine, infectuous interest for her subject, as well as a reputation for cutting-edge research. When I took a class above my level, instead of kicking me out she offered to meet with me regularly one-on-one. Try a high-level class with her.

a lof of readings, but if you go to class and take notes you don't really have to do them. the class is pretty enjoyable, a lot of fb players make the class fun. the grading is ridiculously random, and the TAs are absolutely useless and unhelpful- she isnt much better. an A- or A is definitely is doable, but it's not as easy as some people say

there's a ton of reading that you don't have to do if you know the study guide before the test. everything was alright but i had a big problem with the grading- she curved UP so that a A- was a 95 or 96, which is pretty ridiculous

very interesting ideas discussed, great introduction course and a class that i feel should be taken by everyone. There is a lot of reading, sometimes too much to the point it gets in the way of learning the topics, but allison is full of spunk and character and quite cute if i may add
