Comment:
A bad teacher. She doesn't give you your grade after each assignment so you don't know how to improve your work. She is very critical of your work during the editing process so when creating projects, cater to her interests. If you are looking to become a better filmmaker, don't take this class because she provides no feedback on how to improve.

Ariana shows many examples of films in class for the students to be inspired by. However, going beyond your own creativity is discouraged as Ariana prefers films to be within the experimental film genre. Her aim is to provide constructive criticism of your own work but often at time comes off as if she is trying to take control of your own project.

Don't by the books; I spent like $100+ and she half-assed assigned one reading. She wasn't in class like 50% of the time and I did an experiment where I made the weirdest, non-sensical thing in 30 minutes and she gave me an A. I don't think she knows what she's doing or grades on any sort of criteria. Good if you like to be creative, though.

Ariana gives incredible feedback on films. Although she is very anti-narrative and pro-bad stuff edited together to create "art" (like all Bing's film profs), she's really nice and helpful, although very busy most of the time. Take a class with her.

Ariana is very "honest" at times in regard to critiquing and giving feedback on work: sometimes, brutally so. That said, if you're willing to take her feedback and teaching, she is a wonderful professor and one of Bing's best Cinema teachers. Extremely nice and caring toward students, very helpful toward assignments. Great professor, very helpful!

Very nice and funny woman, has a passion for her work and the art of cinema, which is easy to tell. The problems aren't so much with her, but more with if you DON'T like experimental/avant garde film, you probably won't enjoy the films you watch/will have to make. Watch her film "Alice See the Light": if you liked it, good. If not...tough luck.

She was very unhelpful, even when I asked for help outside of class. She never gave constructive criticism, and told some that they just weren't creative enough to be a film major. I would avoid any classes with her in the future.

Ariana is an awesome teacher. She is kind, clear and *very* patient, especially with jackasses who only want to make bad hollywood style narratives and refuse to do anything else. Ariana is a wonderful filmmaker and a great teacher. Easily one of the best profs in the department.

Hides behind mask "I'm a filmmaker" to explain away lousy teaching ability. Too frequent a problem with 'film teachers'.

Gerstein is AWESOME...she is a filmmaker through and through and even though she has the tendency to be offsetting. Her critical approach to work helps you grow as an artist. Very chill when you talk to her one on one if you can catch her at a non stressful time.

It's important that she's part of the department. she is first and foremost a filmmaker- she happens to teach also. She'll give you an honest critique if you're open to hearing it...if it's obvious you aren't, why should she bother?

She's not terribly tough, but calls people out when she sees fit. Good for her. She demanded that the classroom exist outside of the university. Her critiques on my work were more than helpful. Her assistance with grants and new technology still helps me today.

she never says anything posative. its always an awkward, "oh that was nice scratch work", like she can't think of anything else to say, and do not have your own opinion in her class, its dangorous.

Awful teacher. Do NOT put effort into your weekly reports, I think she hardly reads them. Extremely unhelpful and unclear, I wish I could put -5 on her ratings. Just do the reports, watch the movies, take the final.
