Comment:
a very frustrating class. the class was discussion based, and she didn't really guide the discussions, so they went nowhere. expectations for papers were unclear and her edits didn't always make sense. she's very focused on "political correctness" but also in a way that doesn't always make sense.

Comment:
Prof Tufts is knowledgeable and caring and she gives lots of comments on my writing assignment. However, the syllabus does not tell you the grade breakdown, and we are always fallen behind the course plan. The class is almost entirely made up of discussions, and Prof Tufts is not an effective discussion leader. Learned fairly little from discussion

Comment:
Very helpful outside of class. Somewhat rigid in how lenient she is with your interpretations of the text - partially because she's so well read in Shakespeare. Well worth going to office hours and getting to know her as she is very warm, personable, and helpful. Was a bit surprised with some of my grades, not the best handwriting either.

Comment:
Changes the syllabus according to whim, is imprecise in her expectations, claims to be liberating the class from "political correctness", but refuses to respond to student critiques. She's also pretty conservative about drama and won't let people read parts intended for the opposite gender, so if that will grate on you, don't take her.

Comment:
You'd think an English class would have to be either notetaking- or discussion-based, but she integrates and balances the two excellently. She's a stickler but not very mathematical in grading -- she makes it clear even with an A on a paper you can still fail. Smart, knowledgeable, funny and charming. Worst you could say is insensitive (sometimes).

Carol is by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. Always engaging, humorous, and thoughtful. She isn't afraid to discuss "touchy" issues, and her reading selections are excellent. A+++!
