3 group projects determine 60% of grade - 2 are graded by peers. You have to participate in this class every day to get a good participation grade which is graded on a 1-3 quality scale. About one literary work is covered weekly, with a 600+ word response due the following week. There are plenty classes to cover this gen-ed; take a different one.

Very specific in the way she wants assignments done, but doesn't explain them well enough for people to do them that way. In-class participation needs to be above and beyond to get a decent grade, even if all other assignments are done well. Harsh grader -- often times won't give full credit on nearly anything.

Worst teacher. She doesn't explain anything and if she disagrees with what your saying she will fail you.

Gives zeros on eight page papers, although they were completed to best of ability. Reasoning being "not what I wanted, lets talk about it." However, she will not meet with a student during office hours unless you email her and set up an appointment, but will not answer her emails in order to do such.

While Cardiff is a very nice person, she is a horrible teacher. You will spend tons o money on novels and movies that you are required to read and watch for class. She is not clear on directions for papers and you will write a lot of them. Basically, if you don't agree with her or she doesn't agree with you she will fail you.

Okay so I'm not going to lie this class is difficult for an introductory course. I took English 107 and it felt like I was in a 300 level course. I don't want to be a professional writer one day and I felt like this class was trying to gear me towards that. We had a 750+ word paper due every week, 300+ word reviews. It just felt unnecessarily hard

I really enjoyed having this class to balance out my more difficult ones; my only complaints are that class was cancelled last minute quite a few times, and I never received great feedback on any of my assignments. The amount of work put into the class is very doable and the texts covered were really enjoyable.

Professor Cardiff was a superb teacher. Her grading criteria is very clear. We covered 1 text or film a week. A text response of only 500 words was due every other Friday. (You should put in effort on these.) This assignment wasn't unreasonable, it was very beneficial. She was always reachable, and her use of discussion was excellent.

My first semester at UK, I had her for a film class, and I dropped it after 2 weeks. I tried to schedule a meeting with her to go over a paper topic, and she would only meet via Skype or FaceTime. She might have warmed up to students later on, but my first impressions of her weren't favorable.

Text responses are due every Friday (her expectations are unclear) after having to read an entire book in two days. She takes forever to grade them and you have to schedule and appointment to find out your grade. You have to participate two times in each class for credit. More than half of the class is failing at midterms. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Never answers questions in class, disregards any concerns, grades you as if its graduate level, gives poor feedback, has no grading criteria so there's no consistency, you have to participate in class every day but even if you do she still acts as if you never do, moves onto different topics very quickly, she's horrible. don't take her class

She was the worst professor I've had at UK. Every assignment was made 10x more difficult than it needed to be and nothing was straightforward. No feedback was given all semester besides by peers and grades were rarely put on canvas. I learned nothing from her class besides to steer clear of any future classes of hers.

This was professors first semester teaching film, and hopefully her last. I had to withdraw from the class due to my poor performance on her "screening reports". We turned in a paper last month, and it has yet to be graded (I still have access to the canvas page). Take something else for your core credit, or another professor at least.

I went into this class expecting it to be somewhat easy, but was shockingly caught by surprise. She is not helpful, nor does she care about much of her student's opinions. Her grading is extremely harsh and she doesn't answer simple questions directly, instead, requires the students to see her in office hours. She is rude is not understanding.

Goes over fairly basic stuff in most of her lectures, if you paid attention in high school English, you'll be fine with the material. She will not answer questions via email, so make sure you go to class. If you do the weekly writing challenges she assigns, you can bomb the tests and still get an easy A.

Cardiff is a nice professor when you go to her office hours. She refuses to email a student about anything unless you setup an appointment with her first. She gives very long lectures, but every word she says is important for the exams.

I enjoyed the class as a whole, but it's pretty tough. She assigns long papers and lots of writing assignments. There are daily reading assignments and you get graded on questions based off the readings. She's nice and if you go to her office hours she will help you. She is pretty unhelpful through email.

Love Dr. Cardiff. Emails formal and to the point. You're better off seeing her in person to let her get to know you and help you.

This professor was one of the most confusing that I have ever had. Her grading was never consistent (although this could be a TA issue). Although the concept of the class is simple, she makes it much more difficult than it needs to be. She misses class a lot!! I would not recommend her.
