I am disappointed in UCR. There have been multiple reviews on how this professor is not helpful at all, and they don't seem to listen. But PLEASE AVOID TAKING HIM. BAD! Look how unclear he can be with his "study guide". "Several students have asked what chapters we covered from the book. We covered chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17"

The worst professor I ever meet. The class is one of the most boring class in UCR. Every week, you have to read 4 papers and finish the summary of those papers. There is no ppt in class, just the paper. Also, the project is extremely difficult. But you have to finish in two weeks. Don't choose this class

Comment:

Ravishankar is one of the worst professors in all of CS. No syllabus, no slides, no notes posted, no website, no calendar, and no grading scale. "Lab" is just a 3 hour discussion taught by a TA using Wikipedia for everything. No electronics allowed in class. It's all cryptography -- no systems security at all. Avoid at all costs. At. All. Costs.

He is very smart and knows what he's talking about, a lot nicer than my first impression of him. He delves on to different topics sometimes, but they are usually relevant to the material and make the lectures more interesting. The class itself was tough, but if you read the notes and completely understand them you should be fine.

This class will appear to be difficult. He is an amazing lecturer. Expect to do poorly on Midterm/Final. I got a ~35% on midterm and ~50% on Final, ~40% on the one homework assignment, and ~90% on the project and got a B+. Just put a LOT of time and effort into the project, do it right, and you'll do well. He curves a lot. Go for it!

Didn't learn to much. Class has to do with math proofs and theory. Hard part is that he doesn't teach out of the book so you don't know where to go to study. Personally thought the class didn't teach me much about security. He does curve.

Class is 75% math proofs in cryptography. He doesn't teach out of the book except for some vocab and some basic ideas. He is a great lecturer but I felt he didn't really teach us all we needed to know. Had to use google and wikipedia as the textbook. On top of this the TA's used wikipedia as his notes!!!

Good class in terms of information however he spends alot of time not speaking on the topic. His midterm and final are fairly easy while the project is pretty difficult. Refer to the class messageboard alot and dont be afraid to ask Q's. Also, he HATES iPods, TV, and bottled water. =)

CS165 aka How To Learn 001. Yes, he is very knowledgeable, but spends a lot of class time (30min-50min)on how to learn and how we are screwing ourselves by listening to our ipods, watching tv, and not thinking about math problems while we walk to class(im not exaggerating). I wish I could write more put I'm limited to 350 characters.
