Alas, Dr. Carter is retiring this year. If, by some miracle he decided not to, you should take a class from him. I took 205, 300, 305 and 423 from him. Amazing. The man is brilliant and delightful. You would not regret it. Since he retired, however, you should probably regret not having taken a class from him if you haven't already.

Professor Carter is revered by almost every student who has taken a course from him (I've taken FOUR)! He is by far one of my favorite teachers at BYU! My writing has improved IMMENSELY in this course; I will forever be grateful for all the time and effort he put into this class! Finish strong, Prof! Finish strong! Ahoy!

"Captain" Carter is legit! The reading can be fierce for non-philosophy types but he does his best to make the topics accessible. Very flexible grader; you'll really learn as much as you put into the course.

Want an A? Do your extra credit every single week. I missed three opportunities to do extra credit and still got a 7 percent grade boost on my FINAL grade. Walked into the final only needing a 70 percent to hold my A. He is an awesome guy, I am going to be taking more classes from him for sure! He wrote the book, and he's extremely helpful.

Professor Carter is awesome. He learns everybody's names and is very personable and merciful. He doesn't like grading unless it is formative so all tests take home free response. There are two midterms and the final, all just 4 short (200 word) essays. I absolutely loved the class. I learned so much and wish I could take more philosophy classes.

Boring class with occasionally interesting topics, just took for a general. Never paid attention, honestly didn't learn anything and never did anything for the class except for the very bare minimum and got an A. He is a nice guy though, funny and a very easy grader, but the class was rather pointless sometimes.

As a new philosophy major, I was intimidated by the amount of knowledge and eloquence I felt was required to excel. Professor Carter is magnificent. He is intelligent and both friendly and patient with his students. Take a class from him! You will not regret it. I put in the effort inside and out of class and managed to get an A.

I graduated from BYU three years ago, and I thought I would sit down and review this class because it was one of my two favorites and I still think about some of the concepts we discussed. The gist of this class is a history of medical reasoning, and then a discussion of Dr. Carter's research on logic and medicinal innovations.

Dr. Carter has arguably been the most influential instructor I have ever had for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. He's quite honestly brilliant and has a wonderful albeit quirky sense of humor. If you're going to take any Philosophy classes at all, Dr. Carter is THE man!

His tests could use some fine tuning, but he gave ample opportunity to get an A. I had something like a 70% average on tests (after the curve), but still ended up with a 101% in the class. He offers a heck of a lot of extra credit and he curves the class so that those who actually do the assignments end up with a B or higher.

It's a shame that some people are down on Carter after this semester's 202 class. He's truly one of the best teachers on campus. He works incredibly hard to provide a challenging, enlarging, stimulating experience. A good man who is always willing to help students. Tests need tuning, but papers and lectures were great. Take classes from Carter!

Dr. Carter is literally one of the best professors I've ever had. He is more invested in the education and well-being of his students than any other professor I know. He will work you, but you learn a ton. He's also very understanding if something happens.

This class is cool but VERY time consuming. Don't fall behind bc the class builds on itself. Go to the TA lab often its the only reason I got an A. Also, some of it is pretty helpful for the LSAT.

Great professor. Did not think much of him at first, but as class continued I grew to really enjoy his teaching and character. Seeks to help you. Do homework and you'll get it, reading not necessary, but must come to class. Tests may stretch you, but doable if you take it slow.

Professor Carter took as obscure a subject as logic and made it enjoyable. Professor Carter cares about his students. It was never teacher versus students. He was always helpful. He obviously cares about the subject too. I can't help but love logic now. Also, his last lecture was beautiful and changed the way I see the universe.

Dr. Carter is one of those professors that leaves an impression on every student he teaches. He is passionate about his work, cares about his students, and his lectures are hilarious. When I was on track to fail the course he called me into his office for a pep-talk and got me back on track. What professor cares enough to do that? Dr. Carter does!

One of my favorite at BYU. He is able to take a subject kind of in the same category as math and still make the class laugh. Real laid back and understanding. He's really smart and is good at what he does.
