Looooved this class. Absolutely must attend in order to get a good grade, but it's way fun, so it wasn't a big deal.

Professor Oaks is definitely one of my favorites. He lectures heavily but explains concepts very well. You can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches because he is always wanting to say more than what he has time for. He's very funny too!

Professor Oaks is a really funny guy. He clearly loves linguistics, so much so that he has a hard time managing his time during lectures. He has a very clear grading system as well as clear study guides, and even a little bit of extra credit.

Dr. Oaks is an excellent professor! His lectures are very interesting, he gives a lot of good examples, his assignments are pretty easy and he's very fair about eveything. Defintiely going to take more classes from him in the future!

Old school, doesn't use learningsuite - don't expect your grades to be updated regularly. Fairly straight forward, but take notes during lectures (I took shorthand notes on most everything he said, and compared notes w/ classmates). There's only three hw assignments, they're long and are best done in groups. Tests were fair!

He gives interesting lectures with lots of examples, but he didn't plan out the semester well so it always felt like we were either rushing or spending way too long on certain parts of the course. He takes time to make sure that students understand the material though. Going to class is super important.

Dr. Oaks can be a little intense when he lectures BUT it's not bad and he knows the material and does a fantastic job giving multiple examples and explaining the principles. I honestly felt like I learned and understood everything as he went through it in class. His assignments are not bad at all. Go to class and study with others for an easy A.

Oaks is a Linguist and has a lot of knowledge about this subject. He shares almost too much info and there is never enough time in class for him to finish. He is super old fashioned with structuring class and ever uses Learning Suite. I did not find his teaching way helpful. He doesn't like answering questions because he never has time.

Professor Oaks really is a good professor. The class is graded on 4 assignments, 1 paper, and 2 tests. If you do the reading and take good notes in class you will do great.

I LOVE Professor Oaks. Any chance I can, I take a class with him. He's kind and easy to get help from outside of class. He loves what he teaches, and it makes it easy to follow along. He is a storyteller for sure.

Awesome class! He tells the best stories and is just so kind. It's easy to find him outside of class if you need help. Such a good class and easy to do well if you attend class and put forth an effort.

Pretty dry. He has a detailed outline that he reads from in class, and you have to write it down verbatim - but he doesn't share his outline so sometimes you get a bit lost as he drones on. Tells a lot of anecdotes - tangentially related to the material. There are only a few assignments, so as long as you do them, you can get a good grade.

He's a solid professor. Very old school--if you want the notes, you have to be in class. Nothing is online. TONS of insights every lecture!!! Definitely not boring. He's also funny in a not-on-purpose way. I didn't really use the textbook much; being in class was enough, but there were a few questions of the test I would have missed without it.

Professor Oaks knows what he is talking about, but is often side-tracked and gets really behind fast. He's also consistently late to class and late in releasing us. For tests, he gives them in class but they are long and hard to finish in the 50-minute time frame. There are very few other graded aspects to the course, which makes it difficult.

Dr. Oaks was a kind, if frazzled, professor. He got sidetracked a lot, giving examples and stories, but we did cover all of the material. The class itself is really interesting. Massive homework packets (8 pages) but if you go to the TA review you'll get all the answers you need. Tests were tough and the paper was brutally graded. Good class though

Dr. Oaks is a fantastic professor. He makes his subject super interesting and, while lectures can be a lot of new information, he uses plenty of examples and makes the subject accessible. GO TO CLASS. If you do, you will be fine. He is always willing to help and the actual coursework was not difficult.

Every class is a lecture, with 4 assignment packets (easy) and one 3-page paper (also easy). Tests are mainly fill-in-the-blank (know your terms and concepts). Two textbooks: Fromkin covers theory and if you attend class you don't have to buy; Oaks is a fun read and its content WILL be on tests. Oaks illustrates his lectures with lots of examples.

He's a good guy, but not a good teacher. He fell so far behind on the curriculum that it was honestly stressful. He was pretty sarcastic, though knowledgeable. Big assignments that are worth most of the grade. Tests were fair though.

Prof Oaks was a great teacher. He may say that he always runs out of time but at the end of the day, you learn all that he wants you to. Go to the TA for help, they'll be there. TAKE NOTES IN CLASS AND READ THE READINGS FROM BOTH TEXTBOOKS! Almost all the test questions are from either class or Oaks' own textbook. 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 paper

Prof. Oaks is great! This was his first semester teaching pragmatics, but it was pretty fun. He knows his stuff and if you need him out of class, he's willing to help. I would definitely take a class from him again.
