I've taken a few classes with dr. perkins and he does pick favorites but it could easily be you. Work hard in music history and actually show up in chorale. He is one of the few teachers at Plymouth that will invest in you because he believes in you

Comment:

Great lecturer and performer, but a somewhat weak teacher. Very condescending and does not like to be asked questions, and has very little patience. Comes to class seemingly unprepared and appears to make up curriculum day-of. Communication of assignments and due dates is not clearly stated. He knows a lot about his musical trade, but not teaching.

Each year he chooses a clan. Good luck if you're not part of it. (Anyone who's not a vocal major or gets an A+ in history.) Struggling to keep up in history? No worries! He'll be sure to tell the clan that you scored the lowest in class! Great musician? Yes. However I find it very difficult to respect a man who discusses grades with other students

Has a good energy and decent talent but has no interest in you if you are not one of his favorites. Also, Dr. Perkins does not really know how to effectively teach without extremely rigorous study; he can't explain things simply and overcomplicates his subjects to seem more impressive. He works hard, and not smart, and forces you to be the same.

Comment:

Dr. Perkins is a musical genius and an amazing choral conductor. Unfortunately I found him to be incredibly tempermental. It seemed to me that if you were not one of the more talented voice majors, he had very little interest in working with you.

The class is very difficult for some people. As long as you do the work he asks you to do outside of class, you will be all right. He demands so much from everyone, but it is worth it since the group sounds amazing. He is an amazing conductor.

DrP is an extremely demanding professor. He does NOT accept that things will not go his way, and because of that, he can get the most out of his students and his groups. He is without a doubt a world-class musician. Because of all of this, he is very respected among the students, and they flock to his classes.
