I really enjoyed his lectures but as a nonmajor taking a UST, this was extremely difficult! I just needed a C so I just turned the essay prompts into an outline and didn't organize or rewrite- you'll pass but barely

Smart guy, gives long and detailed lectures. However, his expectations for the essays are a little ridiculous (but you can rewrite). You have to follow a precise +arbitrary format, mostly following his own textbook, which is required for the class. The amount of detail he wants is insane. Lot and lots of information, little chance for analysis.

I loved Horowitz for all six classes I took with him. I never attended: too busy at work. I'd show up to turn in assignments and take tests. His lectures were great, but I didn't need them. He's actually understanding of that, as long as you do the work. Seriously: he tells you what he wants to see in your papers. Give him what he wants, get an A.

Great lecturer, a wealth of knowledge. You can learn so much from Horowitz, however the work load is not easy. two 10 page papers, one 12 page paper, and a 2 hour written final mini essay style. He gives great feedback on how to rewrite your papers for a better grade. PROTIP write down EVERYTHING he says and put it in the paper.

Horowitz is awesome. He doesn't take role and there's no written homework. Straight up, old school lectures from a guy that knows his subject and is a passionate orator. If you want a touch-feely class where you can jabber on endlessly about whatever nonsense is on you mind -- this is not a class for you. Three papers and a final. The End.

8+ page interpretative papers, three required and one that isn't (unless you want an A). One exam, the final. Pure lecture. Not my cup of tea. I found it very interesting, but lacked engagement. No assignments. No emailing and no technology used for this instructor. Only way to get a hold of him outside of class is office hours or to call him.

Brilliant professor. This guy knows his material very thoroughly, he explains things very clearly and his lectures are specially interesting. Horowitz lectures are anything but boring, in fact he is able to effectively capture all the students undivided attention. Challenging and worthwhile course.

Heavy writing assignments throughout the semester but no midterm. Some of these posts are accurate, in that he wants details in the essays you write for him, but he tells you what he's looking for and allows you to redo it however many times you want. He's a living legend at PSU. If you like history you love his class.

His lectures are non stop, no visual aids. You must write papers his way and if not you will get a poor grade. I did not enjoy his class. I did not enjoy him as a professor.

Horrible assignments. Assigns papers and has strict guidelines. If you don't do EXACTLY what he wants he makes you re-write the paper how ever many times it takes until he's happy. Might as well write it himself.

Horowitz is the best teacher at PSU. His expectations are very clear, and if you are a history major, easy. He has lived the material he teaches, and is still very passionate about the material 45 years after beginning his career. Grading is consistent and fair. I wish he taught every history course at PSU.

Avoid at all cost. He cant be please with his assigned papers, even if he gives you a decent grade he goes through your paper crossing it and leaving comments you can hardly read and tells you to re do it. Good student or bad you cant win in his class cant even get an a without anxtra paper twice as ling at the others.

Horowitz is a great professor! He has been teaching forever and is still so passionate about it. I wish more had been covered about the United States conservatives and from women's perspective but all-in-all informative class. One of the best professors you'll find at PSU.

I took the entire US in the 20th century series and one of the lucky ones who got into his HST 300 course which he only teaches once every 2 years. Seriously, my favorite professor ever. I am an audible learner and his courses are all lecture, I was in HEAVEN! He is very challenging on the essays and gives great feedback. Learn from the best!

One of the best profs I have had. He is very knowledgeable about 20th cen. U.S. History. He has been teaching 40+years and still puts so much energy into it! He is particular about what he wants but very clear. His class is also very helpful for those who want to improve their writing skills. Highly recommended!

Love him and am taking his class again next term. I don't like the "Optional" 10 page paper because it's hardly optional as you need to write it for an A, and it's a lot to deal with when you're writing three 6-page essays. He is filled with 20th century knowledge, it's amazing. Personal stories are very fun to listen to. Most notes written ever.

Professor Horowitz's U.S. History in the 20th Century course is covered in HST327, 328, and 329. To do well in this courses, you must do the reading assignments and write the required essays. There are three interim essays and a final 10-page essay (if you wish for an A). He holds regular office hours and is VERY helpful. An excellent lecturer.

This man has been teaching for decades, and is highly resistant to change, and to contrary opinions. He remains the only history professor I have ever had who disallows the use of any source not directly connected to his own work. His teaching style is adequate, but he leaves out swathes of women's history and conservative history.
