Comment:

The average for his first test worth 20% was 35% and even with the grade curve most people got 50s. He is uncompromising, doesnt listen to criticism, doesnt reply to emails, unapproachable, and takes forever to mark and return things. Everything was grade curved in that course. The Dean even bumped up everyones grade a grade point at the end.

Comment:

Worst prof I ever had at Carleton. Took forever to mark assignments, midterms were a very strange format, and he did not reply to emails. If you have a chance to take course with him, don't. Run as far as you can the other way.

I am glad I had him teaching this course, made me really work to prove to myself I can do it and that theory can be interesting to learn. I started thinking more critically during the course. Not scary to come to his office hours. As long as you do the readings and lecture slides, you are good. Dont have much to complain about.

Comment:

I have never had a professor so against being there for his students. A 20% midterm with 35 short answer questions to answer in 50 minutes is insane, and his ego makes it impossible for constructive change. The grading scheme stacks the odds against the student. His obsession with grad school is ironic because after his course, I won't be going.

Comment:

One of NPSIA's few profs dedicated to the more "purely academic" field of political economy. Knows the subject material phenomenally well and keeps seminars engaging and informative. Very tough marker, but also gives probably the most thorough assignment feedback I've ever received.

Fabulous prof - funny, engaging, provocative and, yes, tough. But tough in a way that makes you want to work harder,and doesn't leave you feeling totally discouraged. All his classes are great.

Professor Long is quite a good professor, actually. One of the better ones I've had at NPSIA. I've never heard him cut anyone up -- not in public at least..

Comment:

Dr. Long is extremely arrogant and a very hard marker. Althought he is extremely knowledgable, he is not approachable and has a very British snottiness about him. He has been known to rip apart people with his words-- calling people stupid; not helpful.
