Didn't really learn much tbh. The class was boring and dull. The prof was nice at times, but got really defensive and confrontational if you disagreed with something he said. It was more of a history course than a course on conflict analysis. Too bad it's an important class a lot of people will end up taking. Wish someone else taught it.

Easily the worst class I've taken at Carleton. An extremely hard marker. Excessive readings (200-500pages a week). Unclear, boring, and useless assignments. He does not teach, provide students with material, or facilitate learning. He just spends 3hrs asking students for their opinion and then tells everyone they're wrong. Avoid.

Nice guy outside of his classes.. really hard marker and unfortunately shows little respect to students in his class. Has his own opinions about the world and for sure has something to prove. Really intelligent Prof, incredible researcher, poor teacher and lecturer.

Mendeloff has decided that he is god walking amongst mortals. He professes to know evrthng about evrthing & decides based on his opinion what is valid. Despite wealth of background information & clear thesis, persisted in telling me what my thesis was & saying it was wrong. Avoid at all costs, he really does take fun out of any course he teaches.

One of my favorite profs ever. If you prepare, come to class ready to make a contribution, and follow his marking guidelines carefully, you will do well. He has high standards and he enforces them. This can come off as condescending at times, but I think in reality, he really wants students to do well.

A great professor but not an easy class. Mendeloff is very knowledgeable about his topic but allows room for student discussion & debate. A tough prof with high expectations, but marks fairly. Follow the very detailed guidelines he gives you for assignments. Heavier than usual reading requirements, but materials are relevant and discussed in class.

Smart, knowledgeable and very difficult. Other posters are right that Mendeloff is a brutal grader and strict on format, but to be fair, he is very precise in laying out what he wants. Just take paper requirements at face value. Class is well organized, readings are good but more than average. His control of discussion is a little totalitarian.

walks around with a god complex or a chip on his shoulder, or both. problem is, there is nothing to back it up! he hasn't published something in ages AND he;s a bad teacher. why did they hire this guy and why is he so bitter?

I really didn't like this guy, and I have rarely found professors out there who I didn't like. He doesn't seem capable of facilitating intellectual discourse in the seminar setting. He just talks and dispenses the knowledge. Disappointing, to say the least.

If you want to commit suicide then enroll in Dr Mendeloff's class. He is an **** and really mean. At least, to graduate students he is. Too many readings. And he gets very anal about usign Kate Turabian's manual for bibliographies and will flunk you if you don't get it right. If a Prof is hung up on Kate Turabian it's a bad sign.

Pretty strict but I did surprisingly well (A) despite it. Avoid getting on his bad side as some people seem to have done. His 'quizzes' are actually covering the material of any midterm and marked ridiculously harsh. Discussions are dry and he does not tolerate personal opinions. The simulation is pure crap. He is extremely intelligent but anal.

Not nearly as bad as I was expecting. I managed an A in his course through paying close attention to what he stipulated in the papers. Also, don't feel you have to participate endlessly - make an actual worthwhile contrbution to the class and he will reward you accordingly.

Haaa, I don't know what those other students were on, but DR.!! Mendelhoff was one of the worst profs ever. I suppose I would give him a good rating if I enjoyed megalomaniacs down-talking everyone and telling rather than teaching a subject.

Follow his directions and do not deviate from Turabian - these are the keys to success. He is very challenging, extremely knowledgeable, and has a great distaste for uninformed opinions. Works with great material.

Dr. Mendeloff is very knowledgable, yet expects a lot out of his students. You MUST do all the readings and go abot and beyond to get an A. I got one, but I worked my buns off for it. Great teacher, tough, but fair.
