I graduated in 2011, and to this day, Prof Phiillips has been extrememly memorable- I hate math and statistics, but he made it interesting, fun, exciting to learn. Most importantly he made me understand how statistics plays a huge role in understanding society and facts. By far just 5 stars all the way.

This was one of, if not the best class I've taken at UCSD. Prof. is very entertaining and has great little stories to keep interest. One midterm, one final. A quarter of your grade is attendance and homework. Class is easy if you take good notes and listen carefully. GREAT CLASS. GREAT PROFESSOR.

prof. phillips is not only my favorite teacher EVER, but among my favorite people. ever read tuesday's with morrie? think morrie schwartz. perfect little man, so funny and sweet. wants his students to be well rounded and understand the world around them, not just the content of his courses. def unconventional compared to any other soc prof at ucsd!

Attendance is mandatory (TAs pass a list around the room, counts for 12.5% of your grade). Homework assignments take 1-2 hours, if you know what you're doing, and there's about one per week. TAKE GOOD NOTES. See the TAs if you're lost, they're extremely helpful. Tests are straightforward, but go over EVERYTHING, so know the material well!

Lectures were interesting. He tells stories in between the material, which make us laugh and keep us interested. However, he is extremely unwilling to help his students. Maybe he just doesn't like soc60 students, but I went to office hours to talk to him and he told me that he was too busy to talk to me. Not sure what was up with that.

Prof. Phillips is probably 1 of 2 professors of whom I will get out of bed for 8 AM class three times a week. There is light emphasis on the reading until week 8, minor homework assignments, and poetry/his adorable stories that he inserts randomly. Not an easy A, but definitely a class worth taking. Keep in mind: attendance is mandatory.

This easy class became my most stressful class. Just as the last review stated, he repeated himself so many times it's easy to tune out. He expects participation; stressful if you aren't used to that. Doesn't get to the heart of the questions asked; can be confusing with explanations. I passed with a B and I'm sure you can at least do that too.

Not good at all. He thought the class was stupid so he repeated himself like twenty times for everything. He also calls people out a lot for answers then criticizes you when you get something wrong. The class is overall pretty easy, but you don't learn anything. Psyc majors, I recommend taking PSYC 60 instead for Stats requirement.

Class was extremely easy although it was at 8 am so he made it mandatory attendance & hw is 25% of your grade. Midterms are given on his website, they're almost identical. Go to the TA's review session before midterm and finals they give all the answers. Funny. Somehow he managed to keep me awake at 8 a.m...=)

I had him for Sociolgy (Suicide) He's not so bad, he's sort of nice, but horrible getting back to you through email. He likes to read and discuss poetry in relation to suicidal brakes etc. He's not too difficult but...you don't have a textbook for statistical stuff (in Suicide anyway)Laid back and interesting-rare for a class at UCSD.

this guy is literally awful. he is rude, condescending and should be teaching a kindergarten class. do not take this guy- he acts like he is doing us a big favor by teaching our class but is so boring and made what could be interesting painfully boring. worst teacher ever.

Given the boring material, Prof does a great job at trying to motivate and educate. He makes the midterm & exam very straightforward. Not alot of questions but they do take alot of time to answer. Study sessions really help. Tests are 100% lecture material so take detailed notes.

Attendance counts for 12% of grade. What he discusses in class is usually off topic of the course. Constant attention on AWK. If you've taken one of his classes, it's as if you've taken another, because they overlap so much. Great guy, great readers. You won't take much from class, unfortunately, other than statistics. Book is absolutely useless.

Social statistics course. Phillips teaches not only the standard calculations but the intuitive aspects of stats as well; this was often the most difficult part. Overall a good methods course if you do not want to write a long paper. Midterm, final, attendance, & homework comprise your grade. Also, Phillips tells entertaining & relevant stories.

Easy professor; if you do poorly on the midterm, you can have it not count towards your grade. If you have trouble following him, he will stop the ENTIRE class until you get the concept. (That part's frustrating.) He takes you through kindergarten steps. Spends an extremely long time telling stories and taking role. But a good guy.

Comment:
If yr bad in stats, take this class and you have better chance of passing. Material is difficult if you don't do hw or go to class. Midterm+Final is based on q's from the book. 25% of grade is hw+attendence (so dummies like me can pass). The best part:Class is curved and prof likes to tell stories. TA Kath explains well and grades fair.
