Lectures lacked both breadth and depth somehow. I love lectures, but this professor doesnt know how to stay organized enough to get his point across. Would have been nice to cover a little more material.

Professor Scher, has to be one of the funniest/ most knowledgeable guys I've ever met. I took his ANTH 119 class and It was a class that I didn't mind up showing up for. A lot of the newer people complaining are people who wanted the final to be way too easy. This is college people. In fairness though, he was a bit messy at times.

Comment:
Scher seemed to have little understanding of the issues we discussed. He made lots of jokes about the excess of white men in movies and didn't talk about the social implications of lack of diversity in the film world. He's obsessed with science fiction and lectures consisted of his explanation of movie plots rather than anthropological concepts

Comment:
ANTH119 was the worst college Ive ever had to suffer through. Every lecture was a repetition of extremely basic concepts. If youre looking for an easy A, this class is for you (because you literally dont learn anything). The professor's lectures are the epitome of unpreparedness and disorganization. Waste of time and money. Final is TOO LONG!

Comment:
ANTH 280 SHOULD BE A 300-LEVEL CLASS. Scher is not a bad professor but 280 is difficult. A TON of long, irrelevant, unnecessary readings weekly. Lectures always run overtime. Requires you memorize all the authors and content of their articles. Three 2-page papers/midterm/final (not that bad), but if you are not an Anth major do not take this class.

This class was generally fine, but he wanted us to write four 2-3 page essays for the take home final. Then proceeded to say that shouldn't take any longer than two hours in the instructions...

There are required books but I never read them and did fine. He ended up curving our last 3 tests, which was nice. He also ends the term with open note online tests, like the final. The tests are still hard though. The class is mostly lecture style with not a lot of class participation. He is very nice and is open to questions after class.

Super chill, funny, and interesting. All notes were online, so you can just go to class and listen about pirates without a ton of stress. Awesome professor, take his classes.

All in all it's a very interesting class. If you really take the time to think about the material you'll see how relevant it is to the world in the grand scheme of things. The teacher is excellent. My GTF was very helpful.

Very entertaining lecturer who still manages to teach you a lot. Lecture material is straight forward and the exams were online. Going to lecture isn't mandatory but they're fun and make the class a whole lot easier. Also, a lot of exam questions are based on the readings, which can be somewhat hefty at times.

Lecture isnt mandatory, but I find going to lecture incredibly entertaining and helpful. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject--pirates. He is constantly cracking jokes. All online tests, so pants are optional. Also, the GTF I was assigned brought us snacks every week and usually let us go 20 mins early. I totally recommend

Dr. Scher is the man. The course material is interesting, but he makes it even cooler. His lectures are never boring and he is a funny guy. A lot of assigned reading, but quizzes and tests were extremely fair to the reading he assigned. Not hard to earn an A or B

I liked his class, at times he was really funny and has great stories and examples. As long as you go to lecture you only have to read the ethnographies in the book, not all the chapters.

He is a good lecturer and you definitely NEED to attend every lecture to understand everything. Writing a 2 page paper every week was the only thing i disliked. the midterm and final weren't too bad
