Comment:
Clearly favors the few with exceptional rhetoric skills. For example, a highly intelligent, private school educated student will always receive praise, while ordinary students get nasty, condescending feedback regularly. Avoid him, for his attitude is among the worst I've ever experienced from a professor and his material was tedious.

He really makes you work for your grade. Read the books. He's so sweet and loving and really cares. But won't give you an A just for showing up, you have to work for it.

Best professor. Challenges you, makes you read and write, ALOT. He genuinely cares about each student, and he really teaches alot of valuable material. You may not get the best grade, but he challenges you and makes you improve in all aspects of writing and reading.

For those of you who think its a tough class, IT IS. To get an A, you have to work for it, ask questions when necessary and ALWAYS READ THE BOOKS he assign and you'll do well.

Authentic, genuine, brilliant, and real professor. BUT his readings are crazy long and his grading is extremely strict, many hardworking students get Cs. My writing has improved bc he pushes you to the limit. But acing his class means no sleep and high stress for the whole semester (not joking about this). Daily quizzes (easy if you read).

Mengay is the wrong choice if you're looking to glide through your English classes without being challenged at all. To me, it was nice to finally to have found a class at Baruch that wasn't so easy. He makes you think and opens your eyes to problems surrounding feminism, humanism and ecology. Try to mirror his opinions in your papers!

Read all material and be prepared for quizzes. Take good notes even if what he writes on board is illegible. Do not go against what he says unless you want him to be tough on you the whole semester. Do not critique anything he says or he will not make things easy for you to comprehend. He might even insult your intellect. Be warned.

Professor Mengay will definitely help if you ask, but he tends to go off on tangents and the coursework is pretty dull. Definitely not an easy A, but if you want a challenge and like somewhat crazy professors he's your guy.

Prof. Mengay is a tough grader indeed, but he is very helpful and gives us detailed feedback on our essays from grammar to the structure. We have quiz at the beginning of every class on the material assigned. We have 3 papers(the first one is hand written) and one midterm(about the terms professor wrote on the blackboard and an essay), no finals.

its amazing to me how this guy gets any good reviews at all. its also amazing to me how similar all those good reviews sound. his grading policy was nonexistent and he was incredibly rude to the entire class and did not at all respect anyone's individuality. i dont kno why people like him are allowed to teach.

Reasons you shouldn't take Mengay: -You want an easy A. -You can't take criticism. Reasons you should: -You enjoy readingwriting and are ready to mature in both. -Your personal growth is more important to you than a letter grade. Comments on this page are personal attacks. He's the most caring and inspiring professor I've ever had.

Worst professor I've had in Baruch. Took him 2 years ago, still cant forget how he talked about death and sex all the time. Unless the course books have changed, you're going to be reading alot about suicide and cuckolds. I scored 90+ on all papers and he still gave an B. I confronted him, and he said, "I wanted you to know you can't be perfect."

For everyone who has had this class and complained that it's tough, that's the point. He's extremely tough however this is how you step up your game as writer and as a critical thinker. He was phenomenal if you both put in the work and are willing to do rewrites, honestly who takes an english class not eaxpecting to do rewrites?

He is a great professor with intentions of improving your writing and argumentative skills. He is a TOUGH professor, no doubt about it. But if you show him your effort, try, participate, he will help you and acknowledge hard work. Try your hardest - say hello, email him. He is a man full of incredible knowlege.

my advice is to avoid this professor. his requirements for outlines and brainstorms were just ridiculous. and if u dont rewrite for him ur grade will be low. the worst thing is that he grades ur papers on whether he agrees with u, not on whether u argue your point effectively. bad all the way through.

he put two essays that he wrote on the class blackboard page...it was awful! then he tries to micromanage your writing and tell u what to write and how to write it. hes incapable of respecting your style. if you're a writer, don't take this class, it's just not worth the irritation and arrogant degradation of your work.

this professor is an intellectual fraud with no real accomplishments. avoid if u want a reasonable education, one that doesn't involve an inordinate amount of rewrites. also avoid if u expect to be treated with some respect.
