Horrible. Never gives constructive feedback and is extremely vague. You better hope you get the concepts he's talking about from the get-go or you're screwed. Avoid this professor at all possible costs. He made me hate history; which I didn't think was possible.

anytime I would speak in class, he would interrupt me and/or dismiss my ideas. I was constantly shut down to the point where I told him that he is not letting me finish anything I have to say. paper criticisms are very biased, with no constructive comments at all, with any regards summing up to "I don't like this comparison" AVOID. rude, and unfair

AVOID this professor, unless weekly breakdowns fit in your health and school schedule. Regardless of your love for schooling, persistence and just the fact of being that good student , this professor succeeds as crushing you moral 100%. Your essays do not receive any contructive critics! Frustration is the only thing you learn in this class!

I have had many other students at USM, both history majors and non, tell me he was the worst professor they ever had. I often don't believe such things. After experiencing him myself, I would say that I agree in that he is honestly the only horrible professor I have ever had. Complete nightmare. He will ruin you. Take HTY101 @SMCC and transfer it!

Have taken two courses with Gary, and in my opinion, he is not fit to be a college professor. You can tell what his lectures in class are mainly based around his own personal beliefs and values. He does not inspire individual ideas, it's his way or the highway. He comes across as shallow. Grumpy man.

After 4 years at this school I have decided Gary Johnson was the worst teacher I had. He enjoys being in control by calling on people who don't have their hands raised and seems to find pleasure in embarrassing those that don't know the answers to his questions. I wouldn't recommend this class to someone who's shy or unrehearsed in the readings.

I get the feeling he is a better professor in person. He openly expressed his dislike for online classes and it showed. I got a good grade somehow but I wouldn't take him online again.

Gary is an absolute joy to take classes with. He cares deeply about his subject and offers a refreshingly modern world view considering his age. He expects nothing more than attendance, and completion of a very modest amount of reading. He will call on you, so just be prepared. I've taken HTY 101,303,304 with him.

Worst class taken in my college career. Tough assignments, tough grading, hard to please him and he seems very set in his ways if etching, his way or the highway. I did pull out a B+, amazed because everything I write was WRONG, WRONG WRONG!

Comment:

Johnson is a good prof if you keep up with readings and are willing to participate in class. If you are shy or tend to skip readings you might find yourself caught off guard when he calls on you-- and he WILL call on you in class. Attendance is mandatory, but two absences are allowed. Overall, pretty easy grader and getting an A is very possible.

Professor Johonson was not clear even after repeated requests to clarifiy. He starts out stating that no one gets an A and its difficult to get a B. He doesn't give you grades unless you ask.I think he decided he didn't like me at introductions. As a senior honor roll student I wouldn't recommend this professor. over 1/2 the class withdrew, smart.

He used the syllabus from another class and was very unclear. His was not helpful at all. He graded each "writing response" as if it was an essay even though the maximum length was one page. Complete horrible, he should not be allowed to teach EVER !

Many students complain about Professor Johnson, but I happen to like him. There's humor hiding under his grumpiness. Do your work, PARTICIPATE in class and on Blackboard... he's not easy by any means, but I think you can get a lot out of his class.

Studying with Gary was the worst mistake I have made in my educational career. He taught his opinion rather than history. If you didn't agree with him you were wrong and your papers suffered for it. Not on one paper was he able to explain the grade he gave me, his only comment was I dont like the way you argue. He is a bitter, entitled old man.

Johnson is tough in the best sense. Ostensibly his classes are HTY, but they're really about critical thinking skills. When he asks you to explain yourself or back up your opinion it isn't because he likes to "shoot you down," it's because he's asking you to cut through the static to clear thinking-- and you are a better person for it.

If you value your education do not study with this man. He is bitter, angry, and entitled. His presentation is disorganized and off topic. His assignments are poorly explained. He debunks existing schilarship. He fails to give guidance for critical thinking. He's dismissive or worse of student input. He is intelectually dishonest and tyrannical.

Comment:

I took Ancient History with him in 1990, then Judaism Christianity and Islam in 1991, then Islamic Near East in 2005. This man knows his subject through and through. The only problem he can sometimes run into is that he has taught it for so long that he appears almost bored. He used to have more enthusiasm (in the 90's). I like him though.
