Would not recommend at all. Has a no-technology policy so you can't buy textbooks online even if they're way cheaper. Tests are all short answer and very difficult unless you love history. His lectures don't make it clear what's important. Choose a different prof if you can

I went to class and read all the material and had a pretty easy time making an A. If you're not willing to attend all the lectures and pay attention and do all the readings, don't take this class.

I took him for Honors Tech & Civ I. Not the worst professor ever, but you should definitely get a better one if there's other options, but if not, you'll survive if you put in the work. READ LIKE YOU'VE NEVER BEFORE. It's identifying terms on the test(words from readings and lecture), a paper on a book, participation/attendance, 2 tests, and final

I took Beckwith for his HIST1210 section of Tech and Civ, and would not recommend it for your history pathway requirement if you're looking for an easy A. The class in theory should be an easy A, but with his tests, you must attend lectures and read the books to pass. He's not a terrible teacher, but he's also not the worst.

If you don't like to participate in class, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He forces you to participate if you want to get a decent grade in the class. Would not recommend for this reason and because he refuses to use technology, something that would be convenient for his students.

Dr. Beckwith is an amazing lecturer and does a really good job facilitating discussion in class. The class involves a lot of reading and note taking, but the material tends to be varied and interesting. Beckwith also is excellent in achieving a balance of important material and interesting information/stories during his discussion classes.

Guy was a great teacher. Lectures are long and always choose the essay option for the tests. Thought I was going to get a B but ended up pulling out an A. Participate in class and he'll help you out on your final grade.

At first I was really intimidated by him, but I eventually realized he's a tough grader because he wants you to work for your grade. I expected to get my first B in this class, but I got an A in the end. You do need to participate, but you can do that by emailing him and visiting his office hours. The class was a bit dry.

If you are afraid of speaking out loud and participating, this is not the class for you. Participation is mandatory for your grade. He uses absolutely zero technology and he rambles so you have to take notes at lightning speed. I hated this class.

If you love history, then Dr. Beckwith is one of the best professors you could have. His lectures are interesting and I looked forward to going to class to hear what he had to say. Being an honors class, he expected a lot. 3 tests completely essay and 25% participation made up the grade. He did not use canvas. LOTS of reading.

The lectures are really interesting, but 25% of the grade was participation, and that's hard to get. Also his tests are only essays, and grades pretty tough.

I enjoyed this class but Beckwith is a kooky old man. Get ready for some lectures that don't really make sense and questions on the test that we talked about for all of 10 seconds in class. He is definitely passionate about the subject though so he is willing to talk about with you if you need help.

Best professor ever. Made my freshman yr very pleasant. Extremely knowledgable and a super nice guy. Tech & Civ is a very interesting class, esp when taught by him. A LOT of reading and tests/final are essays, but really arent THAT hard. Go to class, read text book and take notes at lectures and youll be fine. Funny guy who loves his job. Take him.

Nice guy. Hard test. If you do not go to lecture AND read the book, do not waste time taking his class. Test are in the blue books & can be subjective. LOTS of reading . Slow grader . The class was okay, but I made a C every test .

By far my favorite teacher so far. He know what he is talking about and his lectures are HILARIOUS. His tests are kind of hard, and you have to read the book but if you keep up with the reading and participate in class you will definitely enjoy having him as a professor!

Really nice funny guy. The lectures are boring yes but not terrible. You HAVE to read and take notes during lectures to make a good grade on the tests. They aren't impossible but they are far from easy. Also huge on Participation, it's 25% of your grade and he won't hesitate to give you a poor grade for being quiet. His grading is subjective.

One of my favorite teachers I've had. Knows everything about everything, and his passion for knowledge shows. His tests were short answer, so they can be tough, you have to know exactly what to write, but details are seldom necessary. Definitely take him if you get the chance!

He was a wonderful teacher. His lectures were usually lengthy, but interesting- by far the best lectures I have heard here. He knows a lot about a lot of things and is very helpful with questions! Take him if you can. My friend had him for Tech and Civ and had the same experience. Great teacher!

I took him for tech and civ 1 and 2. he was an extremely helpful professor and a nice guy. The class had a TON of reading. if you're not up for reading 60-120 pages a week (usually closer to 60 and not as bad as it sounds) then don't take this class. But if you're willing to read then you can make a solid A. Usually a reading quiz every week.

Guy is good. He keeps an otherwise uninteresting topic such as History, rather entertaining, and easy to pay attention. If your not willing to read though, you wont get the full benefit of his lectures.
