Listen, we all know learning a language is hard, especially a tonal one where the written language is Pictionary, but this is my fifth year learning Chinese, and she's making me not want to go for the minor. She regularly assigns 8-15 pages of written workbook homework in a complex language in which none of us are fluent. Good luck. You'll need it.

I had to switch my major because I was failing this class. Not only am I an honors student but I am a senior so this has been extremely devastating. I did everything I could to pass and I had a 55% so I had to drop the class in order to not destroy my GPA. So unless your parents speak Mandarin or you've been to China you won't pass easily at all.

Not only is she the only Advanced Chinese teacher but she's the head of the department so if you have a complaint about her class (and you will) good luck. She grades purely based on personal opinion and will take off points if she doesn't like the way you wrote something. Even the TAs say shes "strict" if that tells you anything. Have fun failing!

This was my second attempt at Advanced Chinese and I dropped because I was failing (55% and I'm an honors student). She grades incredibly hard and a lot of it depends on her personal idea of how something should be said (TA checked all my hw and still lost points). Unless you speak fluent Mandarin or are a language genius I wish you all the best.

Good person, horrible teacher. Speaks english the entire time, and focuses all of her attention on reading and writing. You'll be unable to understandspeak Chinese. Basically, she teaches you where to a non-Chinese person you seem like you can speak Chinese, but to a Chinese person you won't be able to even have a conversation. Go study abroad.

She's very polite and helpful when you don't understand something. She's the only Chinese teacher, but she does her job well. She basically tells you what's going to be on the test during the review. There's a lot of assignments and quizzes, but they definitely help your grade. Come to class or else she'll take 5% off your final grade.

Most polite professor I have ever had. Class is very well structured. It was my most fun class of the semester. That may not say much though as I am an engineering major

I have had several classes with this teacher, and while studying Chinese was my number 1 priority, she has made me hate it. For elementary classes she is good, but for higher level classes is unreasonable and difficult to work with. I was excited about this class, but she has proven yet again to SOMEHOW make assignments in which we learn nothing!

I've had her for 2 semesters now, for CHIN 1013 and 2003, and will have her for hopefully many semesters to come. She is very interested in what she does, but she is very focused on the textbook, and as a native speaker, she struggles to explain concepts not covered in them. Pretty tough class; big homework load, difficult and thorough quizzes.

I love Xu! She is by far the funniest, most helpful, and just all around best teacher on campus. She will bend over backwards to explain things to you until you tell her that you get them. More than happy to take an hour or two out of her day to help you and answer questions outside of class. I couldnt have asked for a better teacher than Xu!!

Extremely hard lnguage to learn and she does her best. There is a lot, lot, lot, of work and a lot of times jsut not enough time to finish it. She will try to help you one on one but she can get offended if you don't like to learn things her way. If you're commited to learning the language than more power to you, if not, it's best to just move on

AWESOME teacher, made chinese very easy to learn, her teaching style is great, very helpful, she is really nice and laid back. The class is a bit heavy on the homework side, but in order to learn chinese, nothing less is expected, highly recommended, cant wait for next semester.

Xu laoshi is a GREAT teacher! We are honestly very lucky to have such a good professor with 40+ years teaching here at the UA. The class isn't exactly easy, but if you get lost Jenny Xu will explain it very well. Textbook use is VERY high and manditory. Also, attendance is manditory because you will get lost if you're not there.

Ok, so she is a very interesting teacher, Xu Laoshi cares alot about her students. Tests, Quizes, and Homeworks are not unreasonable... Hard language, but glad she is teaching it. And also you really don;t have a choice since she is the only one teaching that class.
