Comment:

Dr. Burke is an extremely intelligent man, but he is an awful teacher. This so called English class was more focused on the history (and geography) of the plays we were reading. I recommend you take this class with friends. It doesn't make the class easier/more bearable, but you'll have some good laughs when talking about how strange this man is.

Comment:

The most unsatisfactory class I've taken at Alabama. Dr. Burke lectures non-stop and rarely involves students. He teaches from a historical perspective and never dives into themes or characters. This is a history class not an English class. Do not take if you like Shakespeare. Expectations are weird and grading scale is horrible.

DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF IF YOU HAVE ANY DESIRE TO PASS COLLEGE. As an English major who loves Shakespeare, I have never wished to be run over by a bus more than when I walk into this class. He NEVER tells you his expectations, laughs incoherently through about 87% of his lectures, gets up into people's faces and cold calls like a sadist.

I rarely ever can tell what he's discussing in class because he tends to jump around me a lot in what he's talking about. And he laughs at stuff that isn't funny? I don't know. He's strange.

I had a decent grade the entire semester and then I took the final and my grade dropped an entire letter. He also entered an entirely wrong and much lower final grade when the reports came out so make sure to check. Read the book and don't skip the lecture even though he doesn't take attendance.

He is an awful teacher. You can tell he loves what he does but he has a horrible time explaining things, and loves to go off topic. The test were based of what he would talk about in class and not on the books. If it wasn't for the TA I would have failed.

Great man! He loves what he does, and is extremely knowledgable of the material. He is also willing to help if you are willing to put in the effort. Go to class, take notes, and highlight the things he puts major emphasis on. The final is terribly long, but it's nothing you haven't studied in class.

Fair grader. His entire grading scale is different, it's based on effort. If you actually apply yourself you shouldn't get below a B. He's tenure, He's been doing this for years. I promise you will be rewarded for effort. DO NOT USE complex vocabularysentences in essay. He likes short sentences, not students who think they're smarter than they are

If you actually like Shakespeare-do NOT take this class. I was given an irrelevant history class. He is a very strange man and is not clear with his expectations at all. He gets very close in peoples faces and stares at them. Very uncomfortable! Not recommended

When someone has a different opinion, he literally laughs at them, even when he's wrong. This is allegedly a discussion class, but he just lectures on the history of the works and asks students to finish his sentences (weird). The way he grades didn't help improve my writing. When he answers questions, he just rambles on about things unrelated.

You have to actually read and it is a challenging course especially when taking a full semester. However, if you answer his questions in class and pay attention and attend class it will reflect in your final grade. Not easy to follow but a very smart professor and will help you if he sees you and trying. Ps the final sucks

He is one of the strangest people i've ever met. He makes irrelevant comments that have nothing to do with the material. I would avoid his class if you can. He grades really easy, but gives you two grades for each paper, which makes it confusing. He also puts down anyone who speaks up in the class.

This man is odd. The first two words of the passage of "A Marriage of Heaven and Hell" are "Rintrah roars." Instead of reading this, like a normal human being, he literally roared at the top of his lungs. He laughs at anything that could be portrayed as sexual. Basically, he has the mentality of a 13 year old boy. I still am scarred by this class.

He flat out lies to students.I had one of the highest grades in his class before the final(A-)and asked him when we would be getting the papers back.He promised we would receive them during dead week,but did not. And promised the class that the final wasn't comprehensive, only the essay in the final would be, but the entire final was comprehensive
