I only knew John Holland in his last semester of teaching, yet, even in that short period of time, he left a very strong impression on me. I consider myself lucky to have had him as a prof., and regret not being able to take more classes with him. His teaching is invaluable.

Sometimes you have no idea what John Holland is talking about, but three years after graduation you remember what he said and it makes perfect sense. He does play favorites to some extent, and can go off on tangents. Those two things shouldn't keep you from taking one of his courses.

You either love him or you can't stand him, but John Holland will tell it like it is. Always makes witty and often insulting (yet hilarious!) comments about students' work, but once in a while can be genuinely supportive.
