This was probably my favorite class of all time. The problem sets were actually insane though, so watch out.

read the book before class ,Start HW ASAP . Midterm - final based on old ones . GSIs will help with HW . Quizzes kind of hard . unorganized a bit but fun class, proff is great in office hours final replaces midterm took it with math 113 and 55 . time consuming, HW way more difficult than exams . do previous exams they have very similar questions

I didn't really enjoy this class. I found it difficult to keep up with lecture. I have problems with focusing, so I rely heavily on reading textbooks to learn. This is unfortunate since the textbook is not great for the class. With enough work put into it, it is doable. Wouldn't recommend taking it with 2 other technicals.

This was my first upper div at Cal and it was a pretty great experience. Strain is a crystal clear lecturer! The book for this class is awful and he'll even admit it. The homework sets are VERY difficult but the midterms are extremely fair. Do the practice exam that he gives and you'll be fine! I would definitely take him another class with him!

Strain's a boss. Lecture is a must since no textbook is followed. Homework is difficult but doable with help. Exams are easy if you prepare properly.

Strain is a nice guy and his lectures are pretty funny. His only downside is that he won't write anyone a letter of recommendation which is kind of selfish.

He genuinely wants you to learn. He won't hesitate to give you answers, as long as you understand 'em. And you will need the answers cause his problem sets are HARD. They are graduate-level, and so are his lecture and the textbook, but if you go to OH, and put some effort in the subject, it will be the biggest blossoming in your math life.

This was one of the hardest math classes I've taken at Cal. However, Prof. Strain made it more bearable with his jokes everyday. Definitely not a boring lecturer.

The course was challenging, especially the book and the homework! Exams were straightforward.. no tricks. he was a fair, nice and funny professor who cared for the students. Office hours were extremely helpful for homework help. More matlab required than stated.

Very interesting and funny. Uses a lot of contemporary examples to explain concepts. Lecture was optional, pretty much, but you'd be missing out if you didn't attend.

I agree with the other comments in that he keeps lecture light and humorous. Still, the helpfulness of his explanations is only average, and he's also prone to mistakes. Tests and grading are fair though.

Professor Strain is a very amusing lecturer. He is full of witty aphorisms and jokes. He tends to orient the teaching of the class toward how to apply the relevant math to solve his problems, rather than understanding proofs. His lectures are sometimes a tad unorganized, but he is good on his feet. I would certainly recommend taking his class.

His lectures are spotted with amusing random remarks. He can go really fast in lecture. The topics can get incredibly confusing, but he will stop to reexplain if you ask. Going over past exams are key since he often reused questions on the tests.

Strain is a good lecturer, and manages to use humor to take some of the pain out of the coursework. He's also kind enough to give 30 percent of exams free. This said, the topic matter is rather tough, and Strain can be flaky on offering support. No review sessions, broken links to old exams on website. But funny when he isn't painfully boring

It was in the morning. Textbook was extremely hard to understand. StrainĂ¢€™s lectures were like a light in the dark. Although sometimes it was hard to catch up if you got lost during lecture, which was common for me. Workload is intense. With help of sample tests, exams are relatively easy. A at last
