I had Dr. Burton for two classes my freshman year (Foundations 200 and Shakespeare 263) as well as advising. I seriously credit a bulk of my academic growth to this brilliant professor. He will be greatly missed at WVU!

Comment:
Burton can be critical of stupid or ill-advised comments, so he can be intimidating in class. He encouraged me. Nice guy. It wasn't easy to get an A. I recall him bemoaning the American invasion of Iraq, but aside from that he really kept his politics to himself. Probably too smart for WVU.

He's one of the best professors I've had. He is extremely knowledgeable, and he makes Shakespeare something incredibly understandable and interesting. I now love Shakespeare because I took this class. He expects a lot from his students so be prepared to work hard. Students who don't like him are put off by the hard work he demands from them.

He says "umm" a lot. Actually, he probably says it about 1,000 times per class. However, he is a good teacher. If you email him with problems he always tries to help, you just have to have a positive attitude! You WILL work, but you will learn.

I had Burton as an advisor. Not fun. He didn't know what he was talking about when it came to setting up cluster classes and prerequisites, and would get pissed off at you if you didn't take absolutely every class he personally suggested. I agree with whoever said he was an arrogant prick; if you get him as an advisor, just pick your own schedule.

I've had Burton for 2 classes and he's also my advisor. He's extremely helpful, but don't expect to get through his classes without any work. He is very accepting of new ideas and an overall brilliant man. He knows what he's talking about and he wants you to know what you're taking about. Be prepared to defend yourself on the spot. Great teacher.

I have had Burton for three classes and as an advisor. He gets a bad rap because he's incredibly intelligent, somewhat intimidating, and expects you to do work, and defend your ideas. He is very helpful when asked. Many students are just too lazy for his rigorous courses. Definitely one of the best professors I have ever had. Too smart for WVU.

Comment:
A very sad case of a professor that clearly knows the material he's teaching, but has no real idea of how to structure or teach a class. Poor reviews of submitted work, poor planning of assignments, and more or less useless arrangements of material make for a class with possibly great potential being absurdly boring.

Here's the thing about Burton: he won't coddle you. He will encourage you, give you constructive feedback and demand excellence. I have had him multiple times, and though I may not enjoy him sometimes, I do respect him. Maybe some people should suck it up. He's the answer to the overabundance of touchy-feely nonsense rampant in the department.

COMPLETELY AVOID HIM AS AN ADVISOR. As a double major new to the department, he was my first. Not only did he not know what he was talking about, he patronized me and my (as it turned out) completely correct take on registration, then literally laughed in my face when asked if I could contact him again for further assistance - very bad attitude.

This guy is insane. He takes Shakespeare and makes him into something he def isn't! Shakespeare would cry if he heard the discussions in this class.

If you have a lot of experience with Shakespeare and already understand and can analyze it on your own, then you will like Jonathan. If you are expecting to learn how to analyze, not your guy. Lots of writting assignments.

His Shakespeare class was wonderful! He demands that you read and participate, but he is easygoing and understanding as well. He was very helpful outside of class. The class was interesting and fun. Take him if you have the chance!!!

Jonathan Burton is fabulous. While I enjoyed his class because of the intense discussion, I did not find out until I entered graduate school just what an excellent grounding he had given me in post-colonialism. I now realize that his class, along with one or two others, provided my sole training for grad school. Do the readings and you'll be fine.
