She is not a hard teacher and there were not many assignments, but she is a tough grader as sometimes she could only have positive feedback but the paper would still be a B+. Attendance is mandatory since participation is a large part of the grade.

Comment:

Very easy professor. Film viewing is mandatory because TA has you write initials, and its part of your participation grade. She has you watch good films like Scorsese's trilogy (Mean Streets, Goodfellas, and Casino). You also watch the Godfather trilogy. Our class had 3 papers (5 pages long) and a take home final (5 pages). Graded fairly easily.

She's super nice and a really easy grader. She chose interesting books for the course, had interesting things to say about them, and tried to encourage discussion in class. Only a few essays, and she grades them so generously. If you got below a B on the midterm, she gave you a second chance to write it. Nice professor and a super easy A.

Comment:

Easy class since the films were awesome- Goodfellas! Attendance is mandatory for both the lecture and film viewing, and the journals were easy- half a page analysis. It is best to reiterate what she says in class for the papers since she doesn't give you a rubric or explanations about why she wants on the assignments. Don't buy the READER!

She picked great movies to watch, Godfather, Goodfellas, Mean Streets. She doesn't really explain what she wants on papers, no rubrics, no explanation on journals etc. It's a waste of time buying the reader too. It's a very easy B.

I am an engineering major, and this class was by far one of the best I've ever had. Prof. Schiesari was able to help me think about and appreciate movies in ways that I never thought of before. This class was a great leaning experience for me, and it was a lot of fun as well. We covered mostly gangster Italian films. I highly recommend this class!!

I totally agree with everything the previous person said about this class. it seemed like it would be really easy, and the material IS interesting. HOWEVER what is expected of us is totally unclear and the grading was harsh considering the test was short answer based on what PROF said in class but was not graded by her.

By far the best class I've ever taken. This class was extremely interesting, and the movies she screened were amazing. I love the gangster genre she uses and she is an extremely easy grader. Would recommend taking her class!

Comment:

She's definitely an easy grader on essays (nearly impossible to get below a B). However, we don't learn beyond the plot of the films. But, as a person, she's kind and thoughtful. Her lectures are reiterated material, but it's definitely not boring. Mandatory/Graded Attendance, 2 Essays, and 2 Exams. That's all folks!

Even for a class on film studies, this was a far-cry from a learning experience. Discussions of films would usually be simple reiterations of movies' plots containing significant spoilers for those who had not seen it prior to the screening. Easy grader for anyone who can pay attention and knows their terminology, and still, highly disappointing.

No, no, and no! This class was horrible. Very unclear what is expected of us. The tests were straightforward and "do able" but her little study guide doesn't list every thing that it should on the test. Her tests are straight up writing short anwser. I don't recommend. 5 textbooks involved. I took the 2 unit portion of the class and it was a mistak

Professor Schiesari is one of my favorite professor's of my whole college career. I took this class in the summer and although we had a lot of reading and a lot of work for six weeks, I thought it was very much worth it. The knowledge that I gained from this class was very insightful and I enjoyed going to class everyday!

A wonderful teacher. Her class is down to earth; encourages discussion and participation. Enthusiastic about the subject matter and will work with students. As long as your work is on time grading is more than fair. Therefore, if you put decent effort and your work is on time, there is no way you should get less than B-. Highly recommended.

Juliana is one of the best professors at UC davis. I'm a Mechanical Engineering major and yet I found the class to be one of the most enjoyable experiences at davis. The movies were great, the discussion was excellent and overall, i had a great time. Exams were take home essays :-)

Great instructor. Took her for Italian Cinema. Very fun class, she gives lectures on what will be on test. Very fun, watch tons of movies (Goodfellas, Gangs of New york, Taxi Driver, etc...)
