Comment:

Best Professor on the planet for Calculus II. Could most likely teach Calculus to a rock and it would pass. The subject itself is difficult but the lectures are amazing and prepare you for all the homeworks, quizzes, and exams. Study hard and you'll do great. His sense of humor is a nice mix for a Calculus class, livens up the learning.

He is a good teacher and he is actually kinda funny if you have a dry sense of humor. He gives out a lot of homework and sometimes it doesn't match with the lecture, but he is willing to go over questions at the beginning of class.

He is seriously the best Math prof I have ever had at UTC! He is a fair grader and really cares about his students. There were 3 tests and one cumulative final exam that could replace the lower test (He made it optional the last day of class). He goes over what will be on each test as well. I am very sad I will never have him again!

Dr. Van Der Merwe expends a lot of energy making his lessons engaging and understandable. He cares about the students and their performance. He will work with you if you are struggling, and he encourages questions during class. He doesn't seem jaded like many other professors. He seems to genuinely enjoy teaching, which encourages learning.

Vandermerwe is a great guy, but a tough teacher. Assignments can be tricky as well as the test. He tries to really get you to understand in class, but it's sometimes hard to translate the information from notes to assignments or tests. Take him if you're really willing to work for it.

He is by far the best math teacher I've had at this school. He speaks clearly, covers material at an acceptable rate and works plenty of example problems. Homework is fair and the tests are not that bad. He can be a bit condescending at times, but nothing too bad. Attendance is mandatory.

Fantastic teacher. Dr. Van Der Merwe wants his students to succeed and is always willing to help. The amount of homework and tests is acceptable, and his grading is fair. He also makes the class lively and fun. If math is one of your poorer subjects, fret not! So long as you do the homework and ask for help when needed, you'll be fine.

Great teacher. I do not enjoy math, but Vandermerwe was patient and very clear about problems. He was funny and kept the class entertained. I would definitely recommend him for math classes. Attendence is mandatory. Moderate homework. Tests are 20 questions. Teaches real world math.
