This class was amazing! I felt that I was actually able to learn the material without the pressure of having to take the tests by myself. He gives you resources to do well on the exams. The lectures are so interesting and engaging. He is very funny and his accent makes the class even better. I'd highly recommend taking this class for your Civ GE!

Funniest prof I've ever had. Class isn't mandatory, but he's funny. Get the textbook - midterms are open note, book, everything. Throw a quizlet together for yourself of art examples (go beyond his slides!), listen to the music a bunch, and you'll be just fine on the exams. Final was open everything because of corona. Adapted really well for that!

I loved Professor Howard's class! He has a great sense of humor and is a solid storyteller. One written assignment (10% of grade), 9 online quizzes (20%) that can be retaken unlimited times, and 5 exams (3 in class, 2 online, 70%). Final is closed-book, rest are open. Very caring, engaged, and inspiring teacher.

Dr. Howard is great. Quite possibly the the coolest feminist who I have ever met. His lectures are funny, two in-class identification exams, two online multiple choice tests, one final in class, one easy written assignment: all tests are open book, note,.etc.. You need to put work in to get an A, but it's far from impossible.

Dr. Howard is HILARIOUS, and he makes the past come alive. I was surprised at how much he helped me to enjoy the material. His exams are difficult (even for me, who has heard most of the music before) but if you take notes and prepare, you'll do fine (open book/note/website/classmate, except for the final). No HW except one paper. Awesome class!

Loved Prof Howard, he is really funny and makes class really engaging. Hie tests weren't too bad which caused me to really genuinely love the artsy material that we were learning even though I'm studying something completely different. Made strong strides to ensure that I got him for 202 as well

Professor Howard is hilarious and relatable, but beware the tests. I was able to work really hard and do well in the end of the semester, but I don't think anyone was prepared for the first test and very few did well. The tests are identifying mystery and known examples of art and music. The first two are open book, but they are still quite hard.

Dr. Howard is Australian, so it makes class more enjoyable. He has a very firm no late work policy, so beware of taking this class too lightly. His ID and Multiple choice exams are open "anything you can carry into class except for the internet" but the final is closed book and closed note. This class really is exceptional.

I loved 201 from Professor Howard so much that I'm taking 202 from him next semester. He has great lectures. There aren't very many things in the grade book, just a few quizzes, two midterms, a paper, and the final. However, everything except the final is open note/book/partner so it was pretty easy! Go to lecture, take good notes, and you'll pass.

*everything except for the final is open book/note/friend* I took a 2.5 hour long class of his at night so it was a little hard to stay awake sometimes but he does have day classes. He is the funniest professor I've had, and he will listen to each and every comment people have. Use textbook for the midterm, because it's open-book. Favourite class.

I took this class for general credit and it was amazing! I've always loved music, but because of Dr. Howard, art came alive for me too. He tells the best stories about the people that you learn about in class and he helps on the online tests. There was a lot to do in this class, but if you keep up with the reading and go to reviews, you'll be fine.

This is a pretty chill GE, especially since he change it for this semester so the midterms were open note. The first midterm was still pretty hard compared to the second one and the final. Lectures are pretty average, and other than a brief writing assignment and studying for the midterms you don't have to do any other work.

I loved going to lecture every other day. He is a super entertaining lecturer and he is super smart. The class itself however is very very difficult .First of all, the class is barely on music. Its more about art and literature. Also, you have to know all the specifics of the midterm and final. In the end however, he curves it hardcore.

Dr. Howard is my favorite professor Ive had at BYU! His lectures are fascinating and you can tell he is so passionate about what he teaches. Hes super funny and makes the class more focused on learning than on homework, which I loved and appreciated.

This guy is funny, but he is not the greatest teacher. Only take this class if you love learning about really artsy. I really did not like this class, and, considering that most of the students are only taking it as a GE, he makes it way too hard. Also, tests are open book online, so it is super easy for people to cheat.

Loved him and his approach to classical music. The lectures feel kind of useless when the test rolls around. He does a good job of preparing you for the final and was nice enough to drop a midterm but I sure needed those to scrape an A out of it. Don't take if you have a rough schedule because reading is necessary

I'm split on rating Dr. Howard. He's a nice guy, but class structure is bad. Granted I didn't care too much about this class since it's just a GE, I didn't read the textbook, but I took notes during every class and got 50s/60s on all the tests. If you read, you'll probably do better, I just didn't care. Workload is light, but class isn't easy. Meh.

Super funny lectures, but the tests are ridiculously hard, difficult to prepare for them, they basically try to trick you. His lectures don't necessarily apply directly to the tests. You have to study super hard for the tests and you need to read the textbook, but its hard to know what to focus on in the reading for the test.

Kinda wish he was my sunday school teacher instead of my professor. He'll definitely give you the grade you deserve and offers you no mercy, but he knows his stuff and his dry whit is HYSTERICAL. One of the more sleep-inducing classes I've taken at BYU, but a fairly easy GE.
