Professor Murphy has a personality even through an online environment. I never met her face-to-face and still knew through her comments on assignments and class announcements that she really cares about her students. She's understanding, wonderful, and really knows her stuff.

Her Blackboard layout is super concise, and her syllabus honed. You have a lot of freedom to write about what you wish relating to texts. I learned a lot from her streamlined lectures. The reading load is to be expected of an upper-level English course; I would set aside around a few hours for reading and notes, and five hours of writing a week.

Lots of required reading on the topics and lectures are a must view. But she is passionate about the subject matter and writing workshops are really helpful for writing our own travel writing essays.

Murphy splits your grade between reading responses, short essays, and peer review. If you submit your work on time and show that you are trying to grasp the concepts, you will receive an A. However, I must caution against taking this class if you have minimal travel experience. You need topics and subjects to pull from.

I took her online class for Travel Writing and it was amazing! She is so organized and thoroughly prepared that there is no guess work on the students part. Very enjoyable online class. Deadlines are 3 times per week, 2 different books with about 6 stories to read. Writing prompts twice per week. The reading and writing are short, no essays!

Professor Murphy is fantastic and makes Travel Writing even better than it already is. She's clear about what she expects of you in class, which makes passing no problem. Follow directions closely, provide thoughtful responses to reading as well as your peers, read what's assigned and you'll do fine to pass. Inspirational class!

I took Murphy for travel writing and I was impressed with her level of involvement. Her textbook choices were both informational and entertaining. We were learning elements of travel writing through readings she picked that illustrated each topic. She would grade our work quickly and gave feedback to help us improve as writers. I do recommend her.

A lot of reading is involved, but it's interesting and I learned a lot about other countries and travel writing. Prof. Murphy is kind, helpful, and provides video lectures. Be prepared to do peer reviews and give constructive criticism. Complete all reading reviews, writings, and peer reviews to get full credit. A simple and fun class.

I loved this class! We had to write several travel articles and she gave great feedback, but I didn't lose points. I'm assuming that she understood we all have our own "voice" and even though she gave advice, it's not required to always use it. It was an amazing class and I would absolutely take it again.

Prof Murphy is one of the best writing teachers I've had. Her lectures are short and sweet, and she is always available for help. 3 assignments per week : 1) read 5-10 short stories, write 400 word response; 2) write 400 word creative story; 3) group peer editing. Don't take this class unless you plan on reading & writing a lot.

Trish is an excellent teacher. I've taken many classes with her and she remains the most important professor in my education. She teaches real writing, not analysis of old dead white guys' literature -- but the things that current writer's want to do with their careers. She is always available and will help in any way she can. I adore her.

I took an online summer course with Trish Murphy and just adore her. Many times in online classes, you never get to know your professor, but even with the division via technology, her personality and true love for writing is evident. She is a wonderful teacher!!!
