Very quirky, but definitely passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are a bit messy since he can go off on a tangent before coming back to what he was talking about. Had to take this course because it was required.

DO NOT TAKE. Participation is 25% of your grade and he will ruin you with that. It doesn't matter if you get an A on every test/paper/assignment and participate 100%, he says what he wants and theres no evidence to back up how much you actually participated, it's beyond unjust. Your final grade will not reflect what you deserve. Waste of time.

Quirky, scattered, kind, & 100% genius. Russian culture is his wheelhouse. 104 was one of the most confusing & intense classes I have ever taken. Lectures are very hard to follow. Tests were hard but if you show up & participate, you'll pass. Calls on you randomly, ends class late constantly, & always mixes up names. Make friends & you'll survive.

If you don't have to, do no take this professor. He assigns more work than can possibly be done. When confronted about this, he simply suggests that you read more on the weekends, which is unhelpful in a commuter school who's population has jobs and other classes. He is an exceptionally tough grader; footnote EVERYTHING! Avoid him at all costs.

My goodness. I would not recommend him to anyone. He acts like he is the only class your are taking in the semester. I understand college is all about how you manage your time, but his work requires all of it. Which completely disregards those that travelcommute, work, and take other MANDATORY courses. He is still a cool guy, I can appreciate him.

He gives way too much reading and you talk about every article. Too much work for an elective. His tests are really hard too.

Not a good professor. My grade makes no sense. Expects us to read every night when we obviously have jobs and other classes. Passive aggressive and he looks down on you if you are not as "smart" as him. Easy grader, but grades don't matter because your final grade won't make sense.

Professor Brown is the man. He is extremely knowledgable about Russian/Slavic history, almost to a fault. Class is always interesting and very thought provoking and engaging. If you LIKE studying history his classes are awesome.

HE IS A VERY STRANGE GUY, BUT IS VERY NICE. HE GIVES A LOT OF READING WORK.. BOOK, 3-5 ARTICLES, AND WHATEVER ELSE IN A ONE WEEKS TIME. ITS DIFFICULT IF YOU ARE TAKING MORE MANDATORY CLASSES FOR YOUR MAJOR THAT IS NOT HISTORY. IF YOU FIND A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR THAT SOUNDS BETTER, TAKE THAT ONE. BROWN GETS VERY BORING

definitely a strange guy but i didnt mind that. class was very straight forward. 3 papers, midterm and final. a lot of reading but its a 300 level history class and if your a history major you should be ready to do a lot of reading and writing. that being said he was a super nice guy. he bought a cake for the whole class the last meeting.

I have taken every class Brown offers in the upper levels of History at RIC, and all I can say is; He is AMAZING. So what he makes you read and randomly picks people to talk, it ENFORCES retention of material, and helps on your tests(which he provides comprehensive guides for a week or so in advance). He is also flexible with help and office hours.

Brown is a very knowledgeable professor, he tries his hardest to make class enjoyable for everyone. I would recommend this class as a core 4 for history majors. He piles on way too much work for a 200 level class. All of the readings it would take about 3 hours for every session. He is a fair grader, but his papers are often on difficult topics.

IF YOU ARE LAZY, THIS IS NOT THE CLASS FOR YOU. TESTS ARE STRAIGHTFORWARD, AND STUDY GUIDES ARE GIVEN. HE TEACHES IN A FOOLPROOF WAY, DEFINITELY GIVING YOU ENOUGH TO ACE HIS EXAMS. THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE HEAPED INSULTS ON HIM CAN GO TO HELL ON HORSEBACK, WHISTLING, BECAUSE THIS PROFESSOR IS RESPECTFUL, KNOWLEDGEABLE, HUMBLE, AND WILLING TO CUT SLACK.

if you like history and you like ancient civilization then you will be fine. be prepared to be embaressed in front of the class for a "group quiz". calls on you unexpectidly, so be ready. He tries to be a nice guy, pretty understanding with late work.

If you do not do your work you will fail. He gives alot of reading, but if you do it you can follow along with that he is talking about in class, it did take a few classes to catch on to his teaching style in order to take notes. He knows everything there is about Russia, and knows alot of people. Work hard and you will learn alot Lots of essays

Professor Brown can be a total jerk. be prepared to get randomnly called on. he'll embaress you infront of others, and if he knows your shy he will pick on you even more. his test aren't fair, the questions on it are hardly ever whats in the study guide. he's hard to understand and goes off topic alot. avoid him if you can

worst professor in the history department. lectures are wasted on meandering droning made even more confusing by words nobody understands. absolutely no help outside of class, wikipedia becomes your best friend when studying. texts are dry and hopelessly worded in thick prose that never helps clarify lectures. tests are enormously demanding. AVOID.
