Comment:
The pace of the lectures were slow. However, Dr. Chen genuinely wants you to learn. The assignments do contribute a lot towards your understanding of the material as long as you complete them independently. The final required a bit of problem solving skills to utilize the concepts to solve questions that were a step above the assignments.

His final was impossible. There is no way you could know how to solve those questions in two and half hours... He told us that "questions would be similar to those on your assignments" before midterm and final. Midterm was easy, and those questions were like those you have seen. However, he crushed us on the final. Be prepared to fail.

Comment:
He just read his notes for the most time. Some times he might give some extra handout materials. The assignments are a little bit tough, and he gave the solution only few days before the test. If you cannot solve the assignments, don't worry. The final is much easier than that. Generally, he is a nice person.

Lectures are pretty dry, but at least they reflect the course material closely. His exams are pretty fair. Many people will skip his classes though.

Basically reads the course notes package during the lecture. Midterm exam was fair provided you were familiar with assignments and examples from class. Final exam was difficult and covered material we did not learn how to solve in class.

Very poor professor, very sloppy attitude towards the course. Poor lecturing ability and very strange accent. No TA no homework solution. Try your best to avoid this professor.

He has an accent that is sometimes difficult to understand but he really tries to make sure he is clear. He clearly outlines what you need to pass and gives good examples of exam level questions. He likes it when students show up to his lectures. Overall, he is a pretty good professor even though chemistry can be pretty boring to learn sometimes!!!

All review before the midterm but gets crazy after the midterm. He has a very thick accent and only about a third of the class was showing up at the end of the term. The midterm is 10 multiple choice and the final exam is 15 multiple choice...

Dr. Chen's lectures were very organized and helpful. His lectures, combined with our assignments were good preparation for the midterm and final exam. Overall, he isn't the most engaging prof and the course content isn't very exciting but at least he's a happy and organized guy. Plus, he certainly knows his stuff as he is a Canada Research Chair

Comment:
He is very unclear in his explanations and his accent is very distracting. Spends too much time explaining silly concepts and then flies through the example problems not giving enough time to copy them down. Posts all his powerpoints online without the example solutions so they are basically useless. At least he smiles a lot. Get solutions manual.

His lecture notes are kind of helpful. But his lectures, almost like reading his slides. Examples are quite good.

i liked the topics of the course, the professor was not very helpful outside the class, but he did most of his share of teaching. 3/5 of the questions in the final were about the text and not numerical problems, you have to write your notes in the class to be able to answer in the final.

Many students asked me about this prof since I have taken the course a year ago?. Well he was busy and did not have time for the students, many students failed his course, the class average marks were very low. I believe he should focus on the research and stop ruining students? lives.

Course is crap, don't bother taking it. It is very easy - for the first week we learnt that an electron had a negative charge. Biggest waste of time, ever.

Great prof, makes you understand the material. Surprisingly, final wasn't a killer (as was in previous class I had taken with him). One of the better profs in the faculty.

Slow teaching pace, book on tape, and not very useful lectures. The Mid Term is easy, and Final is not that hard either. But it turns out the final ave for the course is very sursprising (Disappointing)... don't know how he marks the exam..........

Exam's a joke. Use old midterms over and over. Really organized lectures, but I doubt if the guy understands even his own english. Doesn't know the word "malleable", has to use "shapable" instead. Very slow teaching pace
