Comment:
Richard Nelson often makes claims that don't apply to the point he is proving. He often jumped around and was illogical. His essay prompts didn't make sense and his grading system is not established. He will often turn back papers with just a grade and a few comments with poor handwriting. Not a strong candidate for teacher of the year.

Your grade is based solely on attendance and about six essays you write. I had no idea what he was talking about the entire semester and I didn't understand his essay prompts. I found that if you show up, ask questions, and use quotes from the books, you can write about just about anything in your essays and get away with it. That's what I did.

His essay questions make absolutely no sense. He frequently goes over time. His lectures jump around and as well, make no sense.

The lectures were not only long, but completely confusing. I never understood what was happening. He would go so off topic and rant about strange things and go off on tangents constantly. Positives- very helpful when you asked. There's only essays in this class! Figure out his grading style and you've won. Keep the books for reference, don't read.

He was probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. His lecture were just awful. We would sit in his class for two hours and listen to him rant about useless information. You only write papers in his class. No tests or other homework which was nice.

Nelson doesn't know how to teach college students, his lectures jumped around a lot and his writing was illegible on the board and on the graded papers. He was VERY hard to follow, but when a student pulled their phone/book/homework out for even a minute he would say "This is a class! You're supposed to be paying attention to what I'm saying!"

Worst instructor I have ever had! Ranted for pretty much the whole class and taught philosophy and his opinion instead of actual history. Always came late and kept us 5-10 minutes longer. He even made us sit in the dark for 53 minutes when we lost power and the rest of the campus was closed and we should not have been there! Worst class ever!

Very interesting lectures, the only thing holding them back from being entirely awesome is the reticence of other class members to engage in the discussion. I was dreading this class but absolutely love it! The discussions make you really examine/consider the source in new ways! Very generous & flexible with paper deadlines (Thanks Prof!)

Late every day, writes illegibly on the whiteboard and doesn't elaborate on what he writes in a manner that can be understood. He focuses much more on philosophy than history, and I really haven't learned anything in his class. Rambled about a coin for half a class period.

Writes illegibly on the board. Rambles on about things irrelevant to the class jumps around too much. EXTREMELY hard to follow and leaves you even more confused when you see him for help. Focuses more on the philosophy of history instead of the facts. Took this class because I love history. Learned Nothing. Avoid this class at all costs.

I dreaded going to this class. Took it over the summer. Horrible idea. It is more philosophy than history, lectures are terribly boring and 4 hours long, assignments are unclear, and there are 5 books and 5 long papers. I pulled off an A but it was much more work than I wanted to do in a summer. If you want an easy class, take a different one.

I am a huge history buff, but I hated this class. If this is how history is taught in college, no wonder people hate it. I was sadly disappointed. The tangents are TERRIBLE, his assignments are painfully unclear, and he focuses more on the philosophy of ancient cultures than on the actual history. As I said, terribly disappointing.

If you are not a history buff do not take this class. extremely heavy reading required. all the papers must include references to the books, his lecture and your thoughts. As long as you write what he expects he's pretty lenient grading the papers.extremely brilliant tho. Has a PH.D and has written alot of papers in notable journals/magazines.

Do not take this professor if you are looking to fulfill a requirement. I am a physics and chemistry major at saint Thomas. I'm a 4.0 student and know how to write a solid paper. Although his prompts raise interesting questions, they are unnecessarily long and convoluted. There is a ton of reading for this Class as well. He doesn't make sense.

Richard Nelson is a very interesting instructor. He does have his tangents, but he ties everything back together fairly well. He knows his history amazingly well. His assignments are not hard at all. All he asks for is that you can write somewhat coherently.

Nelson does enjoy going off on tangents and not making any sense of his main topic. He does not reference the books hardly ever, so buying the books are pretty much pointless. If anyone needs the books (or if you want them) I have all of them, I would give you then for a small fee. e-mail me at mike0078@go.inverhills.edu but please no viruses :)
