Dr. Francis is a fantastic prof. He is personable and generally cares about his students. Fair marker when it comes to assignments and tests. He lectures on the most interesting points of the material clearly and with enthusiasm. Western Canadian history may be boring but Dr. Francis made it interesting, enjoyable and something I looked forward to

Really great prof who really does care about the success and well being of each of his students. The course is a bit reading intensive and he is a bit monotone in his lectures but this prof really knows his stuff. Good organizational skills and very timely and super helpful in emails. Going to class really helps. He is my favourite prof in History!

Dr. Francis is an amazing Professor! You should be so lucky to take a class with him. He is very helpful, and truly cares about his students and their learning in Canadian history. I now have a true appreciation for the history of Canada thanks to Dr. Francis. I recommend this class to all history students no matter your concentration.

Comment:
Interesting course and he's a master of the subject, but like many profs who have a hand in writing the textbook he demands you buy it and it's just not necessary. Don't buy the book and be careful - he's a notoriously hard marker and he condescends students who disagree with his opinions or ask less than well-phrased questions.

Great Prof, clear expectations and very knowledgeable on the subject matter, especially western Canada. Also an extremely helpful guy, super nice and overall great person. Not sure if really looks like Sir John Macdonald but he does have a very interesting forehead.

Francis makes it clear from the beginning what you can do to pass his course, and how the exams are going to be like -- finally! A prof that tells you how to succeed in the meticulous study of History. Bonus points: Although his lecture can be a bit one-toned, he looks like John A. MacDonald!

Uses the textbook and asks for references to it on the exams. Really smart professor, the material was pretty dry but he did his best to make it interesting. puts a lecture outline on Blackboard but you have to attend class to do well. is a pretty tough marker. overall a good prof.

Awesome prof. I was really worried about taking a 500 level History seminar, and he made it great. Really clear with expectations, good sense of humour and engaging lecturing style. He also took the whole class out for a drink the last lecture. Recommended!

I was in the same class as the person below and had a totally different experience. If you work hard then Dr. Francis is one of the best professors you will ever have. If you never show up to class then chances are he won't know who you are when he sees you outside of class and you will probably get a bad marks. Highly recommend

He is very condescending. He ignores students and marks hard if your views does not agree with him. Doesnt say hi if you see him outside the classroom, he will ignore you literally.

Dr. Francis is quite an exceptional guy. He will edit your major essay worth 40% and give his incite into your paper. (take it and you will be rewarded). He's very helpful and he brought the class some Timmy's on the last day of lectures. This guy has a big heart and I find myself becoming very attracted to his image of the west and his appearance!

This guy knows his stuff. He is very helpful and i would strongly advise anyone to take him. He basically spells out what he wants from you in class, and is willing to always meet before to discuss midterms, finals etc. Easy marker and is a cute old man. And he is wiling to proof-read an essay for you before you hand it in!! my god!

He is pretty boring to listen too, he knows the material, but the classes are boring and it is hard to maintain focus. That being said, he seems to be a very easy marker, I thought my term paper deserved a B- at best, it got an A.
