Expect to use at least two chemistry books. Classes are ok, and the professor gives a few examples while he's covering lectures. You are free to ask questions at any time, and he will provide you with great answers.

Prof. Shippy is very caring and helpful. This is an honors course, so, naturally, it is more difficult than a regular chemistry, and this fact will catch you by surprise if you are not cognizant of this. The tests are difficult, but they are very similar to the homework. Take advantage of office hours, practice problems, and other resources.

He's okay, but the lectures are nothing like the homework and exams. It's also annoying that he insists we have to get TWO different textbooks even though we barely use Harris. Your grade is mystery unless you talk to him because of the curve.

This class is very hard. The lab portion is very tedious as some of the experiments take a long time to complete. He likes to give out pop quizzes in the class worth 20 points each. Do well in the lab section and above average in the exams and you should end up with an A or at least a B.

Nice Professor. His lectures were helpful. Book reading is necessary to understand the concepts. Fair exam and grading.

It is very easy to do well in this class. Pretty much the only thing that matters is your performance on the exams. Although you will likely fail every exam, as long as you are not significantly worse off than your peers, you should at least expect a B. Reading the textbook is advised, as his lectures feature book problems, but it's not mandatory.

He is a very good teacher. Even though many think he is tough he really isn't. When you get to orgo you are going to thank him for what he has taught you. Also you can go in and get one one lectures with him. If you have any discrepancies/concerns with low grades talk to him and he will make it easy on you. Should have gotten an F received an B!

He was nice enough to only give out A's and B's as final grades - as long as ur above the average, u got an A in the class. But since it's Honors Chem you're among the sharpest tools in the shed so u really have to work hard. Lectures went way too in depth that no one understood. Tests and quizzes were hard af. A TON of online hw and labs reports!

He's a great guy, but a terrible professor. I had AP CHEM credit and I took the course for an easy A. That was not the case. The course is hard and half the class dropped before the end of the semester. Be prepared to spend all of your time on Chemistry. Because of the curve, your grade is a mystery unless you go into office hours.

He just assumes you know a lot more than you pro maybe because it was his first time teaching this class. People come into this class with different levels of understanding so the test scores are kind of all over the place. He gave out A LOT of homework every week. If you plan on taking this class, be prepared to spend a lot of time on just Chem hw

This was Shippy's first time teaching Gen Chem from what I heard so he was a little too in depth with his lectures. I often felt confused or just completely lost during lectures.

Shippy receives a lot of hate but most students don't attend his lecture. The book is very helpful and Shippy gives a good overview during lecture. Self study is very important. Do not lose points on lab reports, that is the bulk of the grade. Exams are difficult mainly because of the time limit. Getting an A is possible with consistent hard work.

The class is hard. You have to read the book to understand what he is talking about. The good thing is everyone is just as confused and the averages are in the mid 30-40% so if you put a lot of effort in to studying, you can do well in class. Fortunately the labs were a lot easier than the rumors I had heard.

Absolutely useless class unless you plan to be an analytical chemist. Lectures are a waste; just do the homework. His final is purposely made to mess with students. 500 point final had average in the 180's. The labs are an absolute nightmare. If you can pass this class, well done.

ya, I changed my major. I don't like chemistry anymore. If u have to take his class, you don't even need to go to class, use that time to study on your own. The book is a better teacher but his quizes will still throw you off. I think he gets nervous or defensive in front of class so he tries to prove himself by talking on another level than compri

All the comments that were said were sooo true!! He is the worst teacher ever!! I'm an A student and still had the hardest time to keep up with him. He doesn't teach anything at all. He doesn't answer questions. Basically you are all by yourself. I finished with an A in the class only by luck because he curves the grades. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!

Turned me off to chemistry. Changed my major so that I will not have to take him again! Sure, he knows what the hell he is talking about, but when it comes to teach undergrads...he is useless. He will not answer questions. Pray to god he gets fired! His exams or too hard for class. A 200 point final and the avg is a 78? AVOID

Shippy does profess what he knows, however there is no teaching that goes on the classroom. He is extremely enthusiastic about analytical chem, but feels teaching just takes away time that he could spend in the lab. If you cannot teach yourself then there is no way you can pass his class. Make the book your best friend and you stand a chance.
