good teacher, normal semester. EXCEPT that in the last 'review' week of the semester he continued pushing new material, and had the audacity to assign us *several* lengthy homework assignments over the only weekend we had to study for his final exam. The time we'd rather have spent preparing was instead wasted doing his silly, time-consuming hw.

This class was just pure bedlam. Lacks basic organization skills and seems to be completely oblivious to the idea of "structure" and "being coherent". Retirement exists, I.e. professors should retire. Doesn't seem to have a firm grasp on the the proofs and the content is in general. Not funny but loves to go on tangents.

Chip is one of the funniest and best professors I have had at Bates and would take every math class with him given the chance.

He's cool. He isn't the best out there, but he's clear enough. He makes awesome sheets to help review for what we did in class that are extremely helpful. He's kind of funny, and he moves at a slow enough pace that you don't really get lost. He also solves the previous homework at the beginning of each class. Chip is my spirit animal.

If you do the work in this class with Chip, you will do really well on his short quizzes and tests. He is very clear and makes sure everyone understands the material before moving forward in his lectures. He likes corny jokes, which makes an eighty minute calc lecture a lot less boring. Would recommend taking this class with him.

Great guy, but he's just too boring for an 8am, especially. He's very picky in notation, and I lost way too many points for not doing something his exact way. Although, now I have taken him, I feel it'd be easier to take a different class with him now. If you do all (2+ hours) of his homework for every lecture, you'll do just fine.

Unprepared for class, not straightforward at all. Did not teach some of the material. Frustrating and boring.

Chip is a great guy and genuinely cares about how students are doing in his classes, provided you put in effort. He's helpful during office hours, but he is very picky about notation and wording on quizzes and exams. I found that using the textbook was actually a bad idea when it came to exam study, because Chip wants everything written 'his way.'

I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He taught well, his exams were reasonable, and his classes were made interesting by his humor. While it was mainly lame jokes, something about the way he told them made the class a great time. Not all appreciate this, but if you do he's a great professor and his class is good time.

Chip was a great teacher. The material was challenging but was made easy if you did all of the homework. Also, his weekly (quick/easy) quizzes gave you a chance to make sure you were on top of concepts well before the exams. Great way start to college math.

My friend referred to this class as "Chip Ross Words 101," because any concept that is not explained in the exact words that Chip would use is unacceptable. Chip turns all his students off of writing by nitpicking word choice and ignoring ideas, organization and other big writing concepts. He knows nothing about writing and should stick to math.

Chip really appreciates you going to see him, asking questions, and commenting in class. Show him your essays before handing them in! He'll tell you precisely what to change. Also, talk a lot in class--about the homework, the weather, or tripping on a rug on the way to class. Do it!

He's the worst teacher I've ever had. I almost died everyday. He's horrendous at explaining math, his lectures consist of him trying to figure out proofs, the proofs don't help in doing the homework, and neither relate to the exams. He also wants things said in PRECISELY the way he's thinking them A quote from a student: "He shouldn't exist"

This is my second semester with Chip. I must say I had a great experience with him for Calc I but as soon as the material gets hard you realize how awful he is at explaining stuff. Plus he is too lazy to look at the problems he assigns, and when you ask him to help you understand them even he cant figure them out half of the time.

As others noted, his classes can get boring and it can be difficult to pay attention. That said, he is funny, and also cares a lot about how each student is doing in his class. He encourages you to go to office hours, and is very helpful when you go.

Two semesters in a row with Chip - I think he's great. He's a little bit of a space cadet - but arent most mathematicians? His lectures are organized and always the same, his handwriting is craaazy, and he's very humorous. Corny math jokes are a plus. Rigid scholars need not apply...

I agree, his teaching style does get a little dry, but he's a good guy and we get done what we need to, and he teaches well. Expect daily homework, but he isn't too strict about it.
