Comment:
Do not take Soc313 is you are not ready for all the work. Midterm had ridiculous expectations (have to cite 10+ readings from memory). Do all the extra credit assignments he gives out bc they help a lot. Go to his review session. He has favorites in the class, but even being one of them, I only got a B and worked my BUTT off in this class!!!

I really enjoyed Dr. Ortiz's class. He pulls a lot of his own research into his lectures which I personally found interesting. It made you understand the material and hear real life stories. I feel that this class of Intimate Relationships is overlooked as cheesy or innate, but I think everyone should take a class like this! Class work is also easy

I really enjoyed having Dr. Ortiz as an instructor this term. He is extremely respected and knowledgeable and as long as you actually put effort into his classes, you will succeed. Its not an easy grade but you learn a lot. GO TO HIS EXAM REVIEW SESSIONS. You'll be so glad you did.

Really engages you during lectures, and is very clear with his concepts. minimal outside class work besides two Discussion Board posts. Gives extra credit! He's sorta picky on what he wants to see on ur posts and tests but as long as you pay attention, take decent notes and skim the sources he gives you, you're golden! GO to the study sessions!

Dr. Ortiz made this course very insightful for the general part. He heavily emphasizes constructive criticism with themes throughout the course and is open to new ideas. Get ready to read and write though as his assignments do require high amounts of both (plus it is all discussion in lecture). Would recommend to other fellow classmates. Solid guy.

Ortiz talks about his own research often and has ridiculous expectations; tests are difficult, and he was not welcoming at all for discussing your grade with him...Likes to live in his past and talks about his football experiences entirely too much.

he is a really nice guy. I got a C on the first test, but after going and talking to him he gave me great advice on how to study and I ended up getting A's on the rest of my tests.

He is a very good teacher. I learned so much from that class. It even inspired me to become a Soc major. He is very fast paced but he repeats important things and uses those on tests. All you have to do is show up for lecture and read and you'll be fine. He has random days that he has extra credit activities. I highly recommended him.

He doesn't provide slides for you to look at, so be prepared to be a speedy writer or bring a lap top. He doesn't talk too quickly, though, so keeping up with him isn't a task. His tests use a lot of obscure references to the reading to make sure you did your homework, so know it well. Office hours are helpful. Do all the extra credit.

He was an ok professor. It's been said before that he doesn't use visuals at all, and his lectures are really long, but he's helpful if you go to office hours and the study sessions before exams. My advice, if you chose to take the class, is to don't fall behind on the reading, there are mountains of it, and do all of the offered extra credit.

Well i must agree with one of the prior comments. There is no visual learning; the lectures consist of random speeches and past tales. To be honest, the lectures are dull, boring, uninteresting and overall, terrible. Avoid unless you don't mind monotone speeches about ones career.

Essay based tests, so if you're not good at essays you're going to have a problem. Has extremely high standards, but very forward with what those standards are and willing to help a student reach them. TONS of reading and extra work.

Steven Ortiz is a very knowledgeable sociologist with great teaching skills. He was very clear on what his requirements were and he held study sessions for those who were interested. I went to these study sess. every time and it really paid off. His study of pro ballplayers was incredible and I liked how he incorporated it in our class.

Horrible! I went to class every freaking day, paid attention, took good notes, and I still got a C! If you need visual things, like power point, to take notes then don't take this class. All he does is talk and you take notes off of that. Hard grader and if the review sessions conflict with your schedule as well as his office hours then you SOL!

I loved this course! It is very interesting and applicable to everyday life. Be prepared to do a lot of work-there are several essays and lots of reading. The exams are also essay, but he is very good at explaining the material and flexible as well. I would definitely recommend this course!

Expectations are unclear with his "qualitative grading," so you get whatever he feels like- you MUST go to office hours if to get a decent score on the essay midterms- he doesn't talk about how to do them in class (but is too busy to see you as he is writing a book). He drones on and on, is redundant, and hates people with laptops. SOC 204 SUCKED!

Ortiz is the best!!! BE prepared to do your work. The whole point to the midterms is to show that you have done the readings. You must make sure to cite what you have read, but it must make sense. He is an awesome teacher, but be prepared to do work. In the end, you will learn so much that you will not be right in the head.
