Comment:

Professor Matthew is very willing to admire a student's good work, but is somewhat disorganized and cluttered. Be prepared to have the syllabus constantly changing on you. She gives very detailed feedback but is often not understanding of her students and will penalize you for things that aren't necessarily your fault.

She will say your work is great and then completely flip her view on your project during critiques. You definitely need to put work into the class otherwise you will not pass. She tries to push you to do your best work but it tends to backfire and makes your love for photography go down

Pretty leniant with deadlines, make sure you bring work the critiques. Fair grader and gives you the chance to make up work at the end of the semester. She brings in a lot of guest speakers and even gives studio demonstrations. You'll also learn a lot of technical skills in photoshop, huge plus. Very easy to fall behind in class if you skip tho.

worst professor I have ever had. Technically speaking she is a below average photographer. She has a good collection of photoshop tricks that make up for it. She has no concrete opinion about anything and will more often than not reduce your grade if you disagree with anything she says. Avoid her at all costs if you want to learn something

350 character limit will not be enough to tell you to STAY AWAY. She will praise you, tell you that your work is great, then berate you in critique and destroy your grade. Grading is based on if she "likes" your work, not on technique or any other academic rubric. Love photography, hated this class. Don't even get me started on the final project...

I don't understand how anyone gave this woman a positive comment at all. She plays favorites big time. Also, she'll tell you she likes your work one day, then completely deny that she made any positive statement about it the next. She bases her grades on what everyone ELSE might think because she in incapable of having her own opinion.

Yes, it's a hard class! Annu expects you to put in effort and push for the best prints you can make. I don't see that as a bad thing. I'm not an art student at all but I did fine in the class. She starts by showing each person individually how to work their camera and it gets better from there. Small class, lots of attention.

She is nice, but her grading is very unfair. It is all based on her own opinions. She expects too much perfection out of photo one students, many of whom are not even art majors. If you want A's, don't take her.

Comment:

One of the best professors I've had at URI. I'm not an art major or otherwise a photography student but I had the best time in her class. She pushed me to take the best photos and create the best prints I possibly could. The critiques are meant to better you as an artist and that is exactally what they do if you take them the right way.

I took a few classes with Anu, not bacuse I liked her but because I was extremely interested in photography. Anu based her grades on he opinions and not on your work. She "labels" you as a cartain kind of art student and it is impossible to convince her otherwise. I would not recommend critiquing her work like she will yours...you will fail.

Yes, this was a difficult class, and I wouldn't want all my professors to be like her, but listening to her criticism definitely helped me strive to make better artwork and will prepare me for future criticism in the real world. Also, I got some crummy grades on a couple of the projects, but she explains how you can improve and gives you an opportunity to make up the projects, which definitely brought up my grade.

Comment:

I had always hoped to take more photo classes, and after the first one with her I was done. The expectations were unclear, the technical aspects were difficult to follow and she seemed incapable of properly explaining anything in a way a beginner could understand. If I already understood photography I bet I would have gotten a lot out of that course. If you're a beginner just avoid it entirely, you may never enjoy photography again. The only kids I knew who did well were suck ups.

Annu is an awesome teacher. Yes her class is challenging, but you learn a lot of new stuff. The person that wrote all the negative comments must not have done so well in Annu's class. I definitly did not get A's in her class, but I learned a whole lot.
