Comment:
Professor Lopez is a great man, but I dont think he is much of a great teacher as he is an activist. The way he gets involved in political movements is inspiring, but his class was very one sided. He pushes his bias too far. Your grade heavily relies on your group's work, which really hurt me independently. He always interrupted presentations.

Although his class is mandatory attendance, he's a great guy who wants you to care about what is going on in your community and the world. He doesn't care about being controversial with what he says. You do 3 groups projects, 2 small and 1 huge, and a specialty paper at the end (3 pgs). His midterm and final are not hard.

Professor Lopez helps you get out of your comfort zone and get more involved in your community. You get to learn more about Puerto Rican history and their culture, and why Puerto Rico is the way it is today. Having a good understanding of this helps us see things differently in society and how the United States really is.

Jose is a cutie pie! He is so sweet and caring about his students; however, attendance is MANDATORY, he emphasizes this a lot. Your grade will drop if you miss three classes, but the class is mostly about Puerto Rican history so you need to get like three/four books for presentations but I didnt get any of them and did fine.

Professor Lopez is an amazing lecturer, and doesn't like to give exams. He only gives the midterm and final because it is required by the school. He is extremely knowledgeable about Latino culture, and is one of the best professors I had so far. If you want a easy A, I would definitely recommend him

He is very passionate about the Latino injustices. This class has a lot of commitment. You have to go to FIVE outside of class activities, and they're all in the Humboldt Park area. You HAVE to attend class. It's ALL GROUP PRESENTATIONS. Oh, and he'll stop you if your presentation sucks or your group is not prepared.

Prof.Lopez is very passionate about PR hist & revolving issues within Latino communities today. Strongly opinionated & while some dislike that, I loved that he stood firmly by his beliefs Outside of class activities seem unnecessary at 1st but I seriously learned a lot. Passionate about his history but in an annoying way. I felt like I was being pushed to join the his cause. He'd say he was encouraging discussion but push you down before you get your opinion out. Also, very little history was taught, he'd mention something and go on a tangent, which you will hear several times. It made me lament going to class.

One of the best professors at UIC! Very passionate and loved his style of teaching. Very conscious of everything around him and very involved in the community. The class is fairly easy. I wasn't very interested in the subject but he made it interesting. I would take him again.

Great professor. He cares about his students and he lives what he preaches. He is involved in community service and shows us that it possible to make change. Lopez is a smart guy. He gives these long lectures without any notes, and spits out dates like it's nothing.

Excellent teacher highly recommended. Someone told me about this class and now I am telling all my friends about it. He teaches two different courses at UIC take both. I have personally taken his independent study as well. So i guess that makes three courses.

I don't understand some of these comments!! Lopez is a great professor. He simply asks students to be active in the community and become leaders!!! DONT BE LATE ,he hates people to be late other than that I've never had a professor so passionate as him...Strongly recommend!!!

Professor Lopez is a very intelligent teacher who really wants his students to get involved in the community. He wants you, as a student, to connect history to what is happening now. He splits you up into groups, in which you are assigned a year end project. These groups also do the presentations for the readings that are assigned. Great class!

Insightful. Attend class, read the assignments, participate once every two weeks and you'll do fine. I think only someone who has extreme right wing political views would disagree or feel threatened by his bipartisan approach to discussing history.

Are you kidding me?? Great Professor? The best at UIC? You've gotta be kidding me!!! Everyday of this damn class I felt as if I was forced to join some extreme left-wing political group. He once brought in people who were ex-convicts who were in jail for bombing federal buildings. At the end of his speech no one applauded louder than he. 0 stars

We read books written by his friends. Read between the lines: "critical thinking" is a buzzword. We learned nothing. This is not a classroom, but a political soapbox.
