Dr. Transchel is the best professor I have had. She is very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the subject, thus making her lectures very interesting. The class required a lot of readings and assignments, but only 4 quizzes. The midterm was a 8-10 pg. paper, and the final was an annotated bibliography and group presentation. 10/10 recommend!!!

Kate is a real gem of the history department. Caring, funny and dedicated to student success, she made my research seminar so fun and rewarding. Always started class off by asking how we were feeling. She treats students like professionals and made our 20+ page research paper interesting, exciting, and approachable. LOVE KATE, take her if you can!

Kate is one of the best professors I've had at Chico State. She's knowledgeable, interesting, funny, and she genuinely cares about her students and their success. Class is an easy A: weekly outlines, 4 quizzes, a written midterm, and a final group project. LOTS of reading but all interesting and makes you a more informed person. Loved this class!!

This was my first time taking a class with Transchel and she quickly became my favorite history professor. Her knowledge of Russia and other Eastern European countries is astounding. She is straightforward and has strong opinions but she is very open to opposing views and discussion. Definitely not a hard class if you show up and read! Love her!

In this graduate seminar we read a lot and had a lot of discussions. Dr. Transchel is very knowledgeable and ready to share that knowledge but is also good at letting student discussions develop organically. The readings that she assigned were diverse and interesting. I would definitely take her again.

I love her energy when teaching. She also understands that we're human beings and so she knows how to sympathize. She doesn't want you to fail, but you also have to do your part in order to pass. The class (Balkan history) was fun, but there is a lot of information to learn.

Kate was not great. She should concentrate on the difference between emotion, opinion, and history. This is a university, and she needs to learn to teach at a university level. I was not impressed.

Kate was amazing. I am a communications major, but her class was my favorite to attend. She says some outlandish things, but she will have your attention by doing so. Bad thing- can't have your phone out or it will be taken away which is completely ridiculous in college. Other than that, she's great!

She does not seem to understand that communism is responsible for the murder of millions of people. She has a tough time when challenged by students, and just wants to spout propaganda. Oddly enough she does not seem to grasp the reality of history. She just tries to use it to push a social agenda.

I didn't know anything about the Balkans, but I learned an amazing amount. The class is reading heavy, so it was a challenge to keep up at times. The textbook is good but a bit much. 2 other books were great. I enjoyed Kate's lectures, and the power points. We Skyped with a woman in the midst of the crisis in the Ukraine, totally interesting.

She was very good at explaining everything. She is passionate about what she does and got me extremely interested in Russian History. Her attitude was very upfront and straightforward, which is not a bad thing. We read 3 books and had small quizzes on them. We did use the text book a lot, a chapter a week. This class was great!!!

I like the structure of the class: one chapter of the textbook per week, 20 question quiz weekly. 3 books to be read and written on (1-3 pages ea) over the semester. A number of short videos to watch and discuss, one of which you will lead in a small group. No mid term or final. Interesting lectures, although a bit on the proselytizing side.

The teacher for this class is very passionate but if you are not a history major you will HATE this class. Very little interesting content and A LOT OF READING AND PAPERS!!! I enjoy reading and this was just way too much. Many of the assignments are pointless and you could of written a page on the content rather than the mandatory 7 pages

She's passionate about what she does and she teaches for a cause. Her assignments are easy online assignments, her lectures can be a bit long but her class is worth it. Excellent professor, I advise you to take her! Whether you're a history major or not. Just do your hw and do well on your 3 exams and you'll get an A easily.
