Comment:
I have been away from the University of MD for almost 30 years and I still remember Dr. Holum. I enjoyed this class then because he was fun and very engaged in the topic. He was really in to what he was teaching and wanted his students to "get It". He was a great teacher and I wish I had gone to Israel for the dig he was working on. Great!

Prof. H. is a fun guy, and the lectures are interesting and about one of my historical periods, but I dread this class. We never talk about the main point of the course, and it only ever comes up in the test and essay questions. I honestly have no idea what his expectations are.

As long as you do the reading or at least use SparkNotes, you will receive a good grade in this class. Prof. Holum doesn't want his students to fail. The test questions are given in advanced. Yes, there is a lot of reading, but this is college. Expect that. The TA gives quizzes each discussion which are fairly easy. All lectures are posted online.

Comment:
Difficult course, many books, many tests, essays are open ended and the purpose of them is not well-explained by Dr. Holum. A smart fellow for sure, but he tries to show it too much by using pretentious Latin terminology that makes him almost impossible to understand. I suggest going elsewhere unless you are very engaged on the subject.

He's a good professor but kind of boring to sit through his lectures. As long as you pay attention and show up to discussion with your TA you should do fine on the tests because he gives you possible essay questions before hand.

Nice professor who knows his field gives out 3 exams with the essay questions in advance so you can study it. The class ultimately depends on who your TA is, my TA was a hard grader so its a make or break with them.

So boring its unbelievable. The tests and quizes were easy and the TA's were nice. I got a good grade I just could not stay awake in class. I love history and if someone is boring enough to put me to sleep its pretty bad.

Professor Holum is awesome. Yes, his class is difficult and condensed with information. What did you expect? It's an upper-level history class. Professor Holum is nice, approachable and loves to help his students. The person below me is just a baby throwing a temper tantrum, because s/he actually had to do some work.

Dr. Holum's class was extremely easy. There are 3 tests,a paper, and a final review essay and 10 quizzes, you get the essay questions before hand, and identification questions come directly from the handouts. Master Grissom is the best T.A. out of the three. If you want to actually learn something and learn to write well, then get Master Grissom.

Going to class is a must in this class. He gives out outlines for all his lectures but are somewhat hard to follow. Reading quiz each week that is worth 10 points that you should easily get. He gives test questions to essays before hand, take them to a TA and have them help you study, that way you will get an easy A

Awesome, interesting, and brilliant prof! Class was fun and he makes subtle witty comments that idiots in the class never really understand. We are really behind on our syllabus so he cancelled the 2nd term paper. Really great prof! Grades fairly.

Excellent lecturer- keeps you engaged and interested the entire time. Lecture outlines handed out during class help a lot- use them! T.A. Elizabeth is REALLY nice, not a hard grader when it comes to weekly quizzes. If you put in effort, you will get an A.
