Comment:
Dr. Schanze is a good lecturer, however he is gone a lot. His assistant that teaches when he's gone but doesn't speak english well and doesn't seem to understand the material. He is difficult to get ahold, unhelpful, and disrespectful. Book is awful but required for homework. I love the material, but if I had the choice I would not have taken him.

VERY good lecturer. Has fill in the blank notes that help you learn while you take notes. Tests are hard, but do-able if you study and do the homework. Overall, a very good teacher.

Decent lecturer but is extremely cold and arrogant to his students. Very busy man, and you can tell that his students are furthest from his mind. His tests are difficult, but manageable. The final was way harder than his other exams. Take somebody else if possible, even if harder, the other professors at least have a personality.

Great teacher! He doesn't make the tests complicated. Just do the suggested homework problems because he models the tests after those questions. The tests were really easy for only doing a couple days worth of studying and not going to TutoringZone, but that may be just because I understand orgo better than most people. Anyway, I got an A.

Good professor, teaches a lot in class but you have to read and do problems on your own. If you understand the material and not just cram, you'll get an A. Tests are usually straightforward, and there's a curve if it isn't.

Very nice guy, great lectures, extremely demanding and nitpicky exams. even if you know everything you can fail.. its a 50/50 split on what you know and how to use it. final was ten times harder than all the previous exams.

Dr. Schanze is a really nice man and an amazing lecturer. He was absent a lot of days when he taught our section in the spring, but his T.A. did an awesome job teaching. His tests are hard, but fair, I guess. I got a 79, 82, 86, 90, and a 120/150 on my final and ended up with an A. USE THE TEXT BOOK. The problems help and some show up on the exams.

Great professor. Totally recommend if you want to learn organic chemistry; you have to attend class and listen to what he says, and not zone off 99% of the time. Exams were fair; it's orgo, if you work at it, it'll click. He's willing to help during his office hours, so if you have problems, just ask him.

Great teacher, tests were very fair but almost too easy to actually learn anything from. His lectures were good and you could actually learn from them. By the end he was rushing and didn't even cover Chapter 11, but to be fair, the class only met on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I guess I was just expecting this class to be harder

His grading scale is really unfair. He barely curves like other teachers. To get a good grade, you'll have to rely on outside sources like TZ. He was absent half the time and rushed towards the end of the semester. However, he is a good lecturer and his tests are much more fair i'd say than other professors.

Schanze is a very good professor. He is extremely knowledgeable and his tests are fair. I got a 76,82,85,and 87 on all the tests and 130/150 on the final and ended up with an A in the class. If you read the book, do all the practice questions twice and go to class you can easily get a decent grade in this course.

He's a rude person. He's not that good of a teacher. He is open for questions but then doesn't answer them. He didn't explain NMR well and expected us to know it. Don't take him!!!

He takes points off for everything! so it's really hard to get an A. I wish he would be more fair with grading and his curve is barely anything. Other teachers curve 20 points! It's not fair he made us learn some NMR stuff from orgo 2 which I still don't get..he says I will thank him somehow tho.

Dropped because he didn't spend enough time helping the students understand the mechanisms. First two tests were easy if you studied but then after that second test it got really hard. I would recommend him if you only are taking part time.

1st 2 tests were very fair, last 2 were really hard and much of the class didn't finish. I like his teaching style though. I really hope he gives a generous curve which I heard may not even exist. Organic chem requires a lot of memorization!!

I'll start by saying that I took his class a year ago. I was really interested in the material to begin with. His testing style reflects that which I loved most about Organic chem - the identifying and grouping of puzzle pieces in each problem. I am glad to have taken Organic with him.

Biggest problem: morning class, I was not alert, got low B's on his easy tests. You miss one small detail, boom, the whole problem is wrong. But he is very clear, tests are actually easy, and his notes are useless, just do all the book problems twice and really understand them. Also, final is not hard, just get 10 hours of sleep to get an A (me).
