Comment:
Prof. Miyake is certainly respected, she is a tough grader and unless you state exactly what she is thinking in your papers you will not get an A. Also if you have more than three run-on sentences she will give you a B. There are very little guidelines for class presentation. Her grading is also arbitrary as she calculates to the hundredth(90.62).

I've taken two classes from her and they were both awesome. She's really strict in Japanese though. Don't take her classes if you don't have thick skin because she'll yell at you at least once, but she's yelling because she cares. She throws awesome parties and makes bomb chicken.

Miyake sensei is hard. She's the kind of teacher that wants you to suck up to her. I speak Japanese fluently at home and the translations she expected out of her students were ridiculous- so much so that my mom (a Japanese native) was considering correcting her. She's a very nice person and will always be there for you but expect to work a lot.

Easily the toughest class I've taken at Pomona, but I learned so much. I would highly recommend Graphically Speaking even if you have no experience with Japanese Manga.

Her dedication to each student is awe-inspiring. If Mirroring Japanese America is ever offered as your ID1 choices, do not hesitate to rank it.

She is an amazing, amazing professor. Very harsh- your papers will be demolished, but you'll become an amazing writer. She puts so much time in the class and is so accessible. Take her ID1 if you can! It's probably the best with fantastic readings and interactiveness.

Miayake Sensei is funny and friendly, but will make you work. You can't get away with being absent and have to do the homework, but she is a very fair grader and makes class interesting. Expect to do a lot of pairwork and for her to marry off a couple each class period ;)

I took Professor Miyake's Japanese and Japanese American Autobiography class my first semester of college. I learned how to write from her, and I had a lot of fun in the class. The class was mostly student-led, but everyone there was interested, so it was well worth the time put in.
