Dean Peceny is the best professor I've ever had at UNM. His lectures are incredible and engaging, and he's absolutely hilarious. Peceny definitely knows what he's talking about and makes the class a lot of fun. He assigns a lot of reading, however you can get by without doing all of it (he'll even tell you that). Overall amazing professor.

Comment:

He's a great and funny professor but there is a huge amount of reading and he has very high expectations for the essays. Still he is very helpful and there is never a dull moment in class so I do recommend his classes to anyone, just be prepared to not slack off.

Comment:

I will verify that that the guy's a rockstar. Knows his stuff, very insightful class. Lots of reading assigned but you don't have to do it all to write the essays, and he'll tell you as much. He's sympathetic to the loads of work everyone has to take. If anyone were going to take one PolSci class, I'd recommend this one.

Not really impressed. This is an upper level class with a lot of grad students and the teaching was pretty mediocre. A lot of discussion, but not much from Peceny. I was turned off the third week of class when someone made an anti-semitic remark and Peceny laughed and ignored it. Disappointing that this is the chair of the poly sci department at UN

Yes, there is a bunch of reading. Sometimes you have to pick and choose which of the assignments to actually read. But the discussion is great, and the Peceny keeps everyone involved. Mixes humor into the class, and isn't afraid to offer his opinion on subjects. Made fun of the French role in WWI and WWII.

Political science has very little to do with reality. I took the course because I heard that it was hard. It was. But oh man!...this guy is one of the stars of the university. He is just great; fun, enthusiastic, out-going, helpful, sooo competent that you wonder how UNM manages to keep him.

Yup, lots of reading. Yup, lots of antics. Yup. lots of ballz-out class room discussions...if you don't want to get into it, don't take the class. The guy knows what he is doing, and makes it a painless and fun experience. I took the class on a dare...and was rewarded a thousandfold. Take it!

Entertaining professor, but allows too much class discussion. Some students end up espousing their views more than he actually lectures. TONS of reading! Lectures are on theories, but papers are your own application and arguments - kinda tough since not direct w/ lectures. But he grades easily.

Peceny is an amazing professor, I always wanted to be sure to make it to his lectures because he is such a great teacher. If you ever take a poly sci class at UNM, make sure you take one with Peceny, although his classes aren't easy, you learn so much!
