Definitely recommend him. He's nice and approachable, so you can ask him questions without feeling intimidated. Despite his awkwardness, he's very clear (even up to his habit of writing his verbal segues and narration on the board). On top of everything, he's a fair and lenient grader, plus he looks like a giant baby.

Hovey speaks clearly and can be funny. Some of the math majors in the class complained about the textbook's vagueness; but the subject (knot theory, a branch of topology) is too cool to pass up. There were weekly problem sets which took maybe 2-3 hours each; and a midterm and a final which took maybe 4-5 hours each. And that's it. Not bad.
