Professor Kelly is a gem of a human being. Incredibly thoughtful and kind. He really knows Dostoevsky inside and out. Class discussions are interactive and often very profound. Takes time to meet with students individually to go over papers. He knows each student individually and cares about their success. There is a TON of reading.

Dr. Kelly by far the BEST professor I have had! He does so much to help his students, and he clearly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Russ 340 requires a lot of reading, however, Dr. Kelly makes it very interesting and insightful. If you are taking in the Russian department, FOR SURE take classes from Dr. Kelly!!

This is a wonderful class and an even more wonderful professor! Dr. Kelly has a deep, passionate insight of Russian Literature, and the way he explains concepts in the books will leave you enlightened. You have to read about 60+ pages a day, but it's manageable. You learn alot about Russian culture and yourself in the process. Take it from Kelly!

Favorite professor! His grading is completely fair, even merciful. He is very passionate at helping his students become fluent in all aspects of Russian. There is a fair amount of homework for this class but it is manageable, and calculated to improve your fluency. Prof Kelly is funny, engaging, and an excellent teacher! Uses "Modern Russian" book.

Dr. Kelly is a saint! This class is a lot of work but I could see it being a lot worse if I took it from someone else. Dr. Kelly makes the literature actually enjoyable. A lot of reading. So much reading. Did I say there was a lot of reading?

The best teacher on campus. If you're taking Russian Lit. take Kelly. Either way, you'll have bucket loads of reading. It isn't really hard, just takes hours upon hours to do all the reading assignments. However, he is VERY fair about grading essays and tests. Russian lit = best class ever.

Exceptional teacher. Engaging speaker, passionate about subject, genuinely interested in students' welfare. In fact, his Russian Novel in English class fundamentally and unexpectedly changed my approach to learning and reading.

Very forgiving professor, allows retakes for practically any quiz/exam. Keep up on daily readings. Class gets repetitive - same format, lots of similar discussions from story to story and author to author. Self-professed dislike for grades in general. Class includes poem memorizations, 4 page analysis paper, oral presentation (1 on 1 with him)

As a non-Russian major, I was a bit worried about taking this class. My fears were quickly erased because of Prof. Kelly's excellent teaching. He understands his students and helps make sure that they know what they are doing. Obviously because it is a literature class you are going to read a lot of material, but Prof. Kelly picks the best books!

Super kind. Take home quizzes that technically aren't open book, but in essence are. Focused on helping students get a good grade in the class. Forgiving, and the midterms and final are basically the compilation of the take home quizzes
